Hotchkin and Mataa

Hotchkin and Mataa are two of the few lucky survivors of the Slabtown massacre perpetrated by General Horn and the Guardians. A mother and daughter, they only survived the bombings by virtue of being away from home at the time. Hotchkin's husband Alexsandr was not so lucky.
Hotchkin herself is an engineer. She comes from a tribe of rail nomads from the central plains, and as such her knowledge of large-scale mechanical principles and engine function made her a valuable member of the Slabtown community. Indeed the reason she and her daughter, who shares much of her mother's interests in machinery, were out in the first place that night was to acquire the last few pieces the Scavs needed to return a nuclear engine at the Gonag Rail Yard to working order. Her daughter Mataa is much like her mother. A keen eye for mechanical and scientific pursuits and an understanding of technology beyond her age has set the young girl up for a bright future, if she can only survive to see it. Her upbringing has not been easy, but she maintains a cheerful disposition despite the hardships her family has had to endure. Although after the destruction of her home and the death of her father, the smile she wears has dulled and become more and more of a facade.
Hotchkin's late husband Alexsandr, Mataa's father, was far less of a productive member of society. For most of his life at least. A Local by birth who fell in with the Diesel Punks at a young age, he only escaped the life of pillaging and raiding when a robbery gone wront left him starring down the barrel of his own gun after a scuffle with a Scav woman he'd underestimated. That woman would of course go on to become his wife, and help him kick his habits and addictions when they moved to Slabtown.
Hotchkin's brother in law Clutch is Alexsandr's brother, and the only surviving member of their little family. Much to her chagrin, as Hotchkin has no love for her husband's blood relative. When Alexsandr left the Diesel Punks he was unable to convince his brother to do the same, as Diesel's drugs and influence had too strong a hold over him.
Clutch would not meet with the family his brother would come to raise for several years, despite multiple attempts by the late Alexsandr to reconcile, until happenstance in the aftermath of the Slabtown bombing brought the dysfunctoinal family together. Hotchkin and Mataa, accompanied by Father Clayton Creed, were abducted by a group of Diesel Punks in the chaos of the Blowout following the bombing. Clutch hapened to be among this group, and with the help of the party his cohorts were defeated and the family made a bitterly tense reunion. Mataa seems happy to finally meet the uncle she has heard so much about; mostly despite the unfavorable way her mother tends to refer to and treat him. To Mataa his past is irrelevant, he's here and he's family and that's really all that matters.
