Nightking Masoabi

Masoabi is the second Nightking, Makatsa reigning over Il Vire from his age of roughly 300 years at revival (326E) to a mere 40 years before present day (100X). At the time of his succession, Makatsa was roughly 724 years of age, and sickly from a disease that plagues the Dhampir exclusively known as The Descent. The name was in reference to a poem called The Descent written by Lian Brishaw of Mornhaven. It popularized into the college's classic literature as an observation on the effect of power and regret and their impacts on the brain. He believed that each action an individual knows is wrong and is not at peace with weighs down on a soul, and that under enough pressure the soul will break completely. His work Soulless is also tied to The Descent, but the text was lost during an expedition in a derelict temple for Trulm, Dwarven deity of treasures.
The Descent
Of madness in men, the unfiltered word
Captains of self know well their orders.   Kindness irks the lesser self
For nothing disparished does kindly think.   Power boasts itself for no companion
Yet companions boast of power and expect it come.   For orders are orders, to breath and to eat
To excuse for our past for descent does foster.   Justification be the asylum of madness
No other than power is so corrupt.   Til' the day souls poisoned become commonplace
And the dungeon of solitude doth breathe upon us.
Masoabi was peculiarly young in taking on the title, given that Boholo-holo and Silafetse from The Seven were still alive, and that many outranking elders were expected in Makatsa's place. But the dark rituals of Il Vire led Masoabi to a decision, claiming that he heard Bophelo's calling directly in prayer. This created a divide in the trust of power, and confusion in the ranks. Boholo-holo came out of retirement to advise the young Nightking. The four Commanders remain: Yuniti, Mohlabani, Phunya, and Shapa. Likely to avoid distilling anger in the elders, Masoabi avoided major change. Many see him as a weak leader despite his overwhelming strength. The shoes left for Masoabi to fill strike fear into nearby factions who theorize he seeks bloodshed in the name of respect.   Little more than rumor surrounds the new Il Vire throne holder since the leading ranks are rarely seen in the public eye. He was told to have unspeakable destructive magic in his blood from birth and uncanny control over it. His arms are jeweled with gemstones that shine as he casts, and his spellcraft was renowned within his lineage. But clearest of all the whispers is his faith. Masoabi is a devout follower of the ancient tongue, the old way, the word of Bophelo. A sect was later formed under Mohlabani claiming Bophelo's foolishness, and the second district is currently facing insurrection from faithful followers of the Nightking.
