The Harlequins
With a cry of "Come One Come All Its free admission, to see the show, come it's tradition, where laughter fly's" the Harlequins announce themselves to their prospective audience. The enigmatic groups of masked performers known as the Harlequins are well known by all who have seen their shows. Composed exclusively of elves of varying types they travel throughout the lands preforming for all who will have them, and most who won't. They dazzle through awe inspiring performances of dance, song, and sword play telling stories of nebulous truth.
After seeing the Harlequins preform most are left in a state of awe and terror, for how could one move so fast with such grace and precision yet look like it takes no effort at all; and how could a song both rise your spirits and instill a sorrow within you. This duality is central to the Harlequins, with names like the Masque of the Joyful Sorrow or the Masque of the Searing Frost how could it not. Their shows always contain a underlying undefinable sadness and loss, the origin of which is known only to them.
The Harlequins skill with the arts is matched only by their skill with the blade, for each troupe member is also skilled with a blade. They are the very definition of warrior poets training their minds like a sword, and their swords with their minds. This is the reason most cities do not like a visit from the Harlequins, for letting a troupe of Harlequins into your city is the same as letting in a armed force of invaders. Any reasonable city bars itself to the Harlequins, this is why they almost never announce themselves and arrive with a sudden song and dance.
All this skill with a weapon is useless without a enemy to fight, fortunately the Harlequins have a lot of those. Any demon or devil and their dark followers are the targets of the Harlequins, as well as any who would oppress the creativity and passion of the people. Demonic pleasure cults are a favored target and brought down with uncharacteristic brutal efficiency, usually in a quick raid during the high of a orgy or feast leaving all but the slaves or unwilling dead. Tyrants and dictators are another favored target, especially those who oppress the people and stifle expression. The methods of attack also very with forms ranging from a raid on the palace with the goal to drown a decadent dictator in his own wine, or insisting a rebellion though messages contained in their songs against a tyrant who banns music based on his own tastes.
