2020.11.21 - The Master

General Summary

Jörgund Brynjolf and Ledwen Blackbreeze in the Tombs at the StarMantle - Graveyards

The group continued following Leem into deeper into the Tombs, to meet the master and 'join' the Tribe of the Scourge

As they entered the next room, 2 skeleton statues activated and attacked the group. A hiding Shadow saw this as the prime opportunity to also attack the rear of the formation.

Ledwen shielded against Shadow, preventing its sapping hits Jörgund continued to soak hits, while dispatching skeletons with his new Fire-Etched Longsword. Although he was unable to determine exactly what the sword did, Jörgund noticed it sometimes ignited and hit enemies with fire.

They were mad at Leem, that monsters kept attacking them. Leem offered to go ahead, gathering the remaining monsters and leading them away to clear a path. The group decided this was a bad idea - concentrating monsters in the direction they are trying to go.

They had Leem open the next door, and immediately saw a Gas-Zombie. They blasted and chopped it as fast as possible. As it was exploding, Ledwen seared a hole through it, burning the gasses with it. They shut the door, in preparation for resting, but a axe started smashing through the wood.

As the axe opened holes in the wood, Jörgund spied another skeleton hissing its way at them. Ledwen patiently waited for the hole to get large enough, then threw firebolts through it. By the time the skeleton hacked through the door, it was 1 Jörgund slice from death.

Another skeleton was right behind him, and fared better. Taking bits of Jörgund’s health before he was smashed apart. When then battle was over, they again turned on Leem, chewing him out for the monsters… that he warned them about.

A head popped around the corner:
__ Hey, what do you want?
We are Jörgund’s Band and want to join the Scourge they echoed back.
__ Oh, I’ll go tell the Master. He turned and ran back
Hey, wait up, we are friends! Jörgund called as he chased after the new guy

In the back tombs room, the new guy announced:
__ Master, there are new recruits here that want to join!
What!? Fools! We didn’t ask for new recruits

Jörgund and Ledwen convinced the Master that StarMantle knew about their little group and was preparing to fight against them. They offered their services as “bodyguards”, while moving closer and closer. Behind the master, they caught glimpses of a pulsating crystal. The Master gave them a test - open a tomb they haven’t been able to open. Instead of listening, Ledwen and Jörgund played dumb, moving closer and closer. After 2 wrong tomb picks (obviously opened), the Master decided they were too dumb to help the Scourge

However - instead of hitting Jörgund’s mind, his spell fizzled out… Ledwen snickered in the corner with his Counterspell. The Master stared at his hands… this kind of deficiency never happened before. He yelled for their death and the remaining 3 cultists attacked (including Leem).

A short battle ensued, with the group focusing on the Master and counterspelling another round of attacks. In his last attempt to turn the battle, Jörgund’s massive raging muscles shrugged off the mind spell and closed the gap. The Master saw he was outmatched, grabbed the crystal and ran for the door. And he nearly made it, but Jörgund ran after him and smashed his sword hilt into his back, knocking him down to the ground and out.

They quickly ended the 2 cultists while trying to talk down Leem. Each time though, it appeared Leem was fighting himself but unable to stop attacking. Again, Jörgund crashed into him, knocked him out before another attack, and tied him up.

They searched the Master, finding the crystal, 5 gems, a cats-eye necklace, papers on undead army instruction, and 56 silver pieces. They gingerly wrapped the crystal without touching it, then tied up the Master.

The group hauled out Leem and the Master, heading for StarMantle. They encountered the guard picket, inspecting late-arriving Faire attendees. The group told a quick story on their delving into the tombs, quickly capturing all the guards attention with mention of Jörgund’s Band (its true, they’re here!), and the Scourge raising an army of undead to attack the city.

They took the Master to the guard captain, who took possession and sent for guard reinforcement to fully check and clear out the Tombs.

On their way through the Faire to get to the Temple of Pelor (to deliver the crystal and save Benny), the group passed the performance stage. It was being reset for the next act and the announcer was booming:
__ Prepare yourself, in 1 hour the unstoppable YOR-GUN will be on stage!
The group approached, trying to figure out if this was some type of imposter. The announcer seemed to think they were just interested faire-goers and kept announcing:
__ Yes, YOR-GUN will be here in 1 hour to woo you with his exploits
Finally - yes it is a performance of happenings of a new adventuring party in the city, please return for the full performance. If you know of some of the adventures, the actors and playwrights will be available after tonight's performance.

Jörgund was deeply torn - stay and witness the amazing performance, or continue to the Temple of Pelor to save Benny. Saving won out and Ledwen added firework/light show to the announcer's last calling as they continued into the city.

The group took the back/alley route to avoid any spies. They found the kitchen door locked and sent Strigine through an open window to call someone over to unlock it.

Soon they were in the Temple, brought in Leem, and presented the Crystal to the Head Priest. The priest took the Crystal to their Cleansing Chamber (had scorch marks throughout it). Once Ledwen saw what they were going to do, he jumped in and argued that the Crystal should be saved and used to protect the city.

The Priests would not listen - this evil abomination must be destroyed. Only terrible things could result if it was left intact. Ledwen again tried to convince them that it could be used for good and resurrect people. At the mention of Necromancy, the priests grew angry, threw up their hands and left the room. They would not be a part of that despicable evil.

Instead of pocketing the crystal, Ledwen chose to destroy it, and blasted it with Scorching Rays. The rays shattered and exploded the Crystal, but released the purple goo within it. When the priests looked back into the room, they saw a slowly expanding purple goo and immediately cast their holy spells to consecrate the room and destroy the evil.

Ledwen inspected the remains - a sticky ash. Wiping his daggers, he turned to check on Benny. They found the disease had left Benny, although the leg still looked in poor shape. The Clerics agreed, he needed rest, but should be fine in a few days.

Checking on a writhing Leem, the Clerics found a shard in his eye and tugged/fought to pull it out. Once out, Leem stopped fighting, but couldn't see - was clenching his eyes.

Ledwen pried an eye open and asked what Leem remembered. Working in the fields, being called by some old guy to help carry things, led to the tombs, then a horrible monster grabbed him.

After ensuring with the Clerics that Leem would be ok, the group left him with some last words as he drifted to sleep:
__ Praise be to Jorgund's Band
Soon Leem was singing & murmuring this
