Noble Houses of Cormyr
Several noble houses played significant roles in Azoun IV’s court, often through their representatives. These houses balanced loyalty to the crown with their own ambitions, and their influence shaped court dynamics.
House Crownsilver: Led by the authoritarian matriarch Kimba Crownsilver, the Crownsilvers were one of the three royal families, largely confining their activities to the Royal Court in Suzail. They automatically allied with Azoun IV in disputes, but their isolationist stance limited their broader influence.
House Huntsilver: Known for managing Cormyr’s forest resources, the Huntsilvers were aloof, rarely appearing at court except for major events. Jostlyn Huntsilver, a Knight Royal, was part of Filfaeril’s guard, giving them some presence. Their neutrality in historical conflicts, like the Salember-Rhigaerd II civil war, suggests a cautious approach to power.
House Dauntinghorn: A militarily inclined house focused on expanding Cormyr’s naval presence. Baeryn Dauntinghorn, another Knight Royal, served in Filfaeril’s guard. The Dauntinghorns supported Vangerdahast’s regency during the Abraxus incident, showing their alignment with strong central authority. Their naval ambitions, however, faced opposition from other nobles who favored less militaristic solutions to piracy.
House Cormaeril: Once a prominent house, the Cormaerils fell into disgrace by 1371 DR, with members like Rowen Cormaeril (Tanalasta’s husband) being pardoned by Azoun IV. Their diminished status limited their influence, but Rowen’s marriage into the royal family gave them a symbolic presence.
