The Campaign
The campaign takes place along the Sword Coast in the Forgotten Realms.
The PCs are hired by Admiral Pelago to investigate a small island which he suspects is a supply depot for pirates serving under The Pirate Queen. There is a rumor that Captain Marcos Cortez may be hiding there which is why Pelago is hiring skilled people to help investigate. The ship taking the PCs has a full crew. The PCs can help out if skilled, but the majority of the day to day will be handled by the crew.
The PCs know the story of how a once famous and beloved captain Cortez fell to debts owed, greed, and a desire to take the admiral’s position from him. The captain helped the pirate Brock Brasiliano and his crew escape custody eight years ago. Cortez reclaimed the captured pirate ship and his own. He and his crew made a new partnership with the pirates and joined the Pirate Queen. Cortez has since kept a very low profile; there have only unconfirmed sightings of him over the years. Currently the bounty on Cortez is 4,000 gp alive and 500gp dead and 100 gp for each crew member captured.
The PCs background should include a connection with one of these people / groups or one the player discusses with the GM. These connections should have some belief, conspiracy theory, grudge, etc. that there is more to the story of Cortez. PCs should have a motivation to uncover the truth based on their connection. In Waterdeep anyone who believes Cortez is innocent keeps their mouths shut so as not to attract attention. In addition the character should not be motivated by collecting the reward.

- Anyone that has served with either the anyone that served under the Pirate Queen or Cortez
- A friend or of Cortez or a member of his family
- A priest of any faith
- A member of the city watch
- Someone wronged by the Lords of Waterdeep, and the like.
For example: Your PC could be a sibling of one of Cortez’s crew, you have a close friend working under Admiral Pelago, a priest you trust, one of the Lords of Waterdeep has impacted your life in a negative way with a connection to Cortez, etc.
