Geography

At around 600 miles north of Baldur's Gate, Waterdeep sits near the middle of the stretch of coastline known as the Sword Coast, and itself is one the largets and most prominent cities in all of western Faerûn. It is a major hub, connecting Neverwinter, 350 miles north along the High Road, and the sea-bound realms such as the Moonshae Isles to the major roads inland, including the Trade Way to the south the Black Road east that steps to crossing crosses the continent.     With a deep harbour and     Built on the site of the ancient elven settlement of Aelinthaldaar, Waterdeep sprawls northward from the sea along the flanks of Mount Waterdeep, which used to be home to the Melairkyn, a mithral-mining dwarven clan,[17] and the entire length and great depth of the mountain was riddled with passages and tunnels, most of which were occupied by deadly creatures whose presence in the mountain predated the founding of the city itself.[1]   The halls of Undermountain located beneath the city are a popular target for adventurers,[1] who enjoyed the close vicinity of the city's main taverns and temples where aid could be purchased through donations.[18]
