Chapter 3: The Lees of Leilon Report in Faerûn | World Anvil

Chapter 3: The Lees of Leilon

General Summary

Session 107, 14 June 2021

In Which we Arrive in Leilon

Day 32, morning
We continued to argue as we travelled south. We travelled about 20 miles before arriving in the village of Leilon in the last afternoon. It looks like a nice village although there are lots of ruins and abandoned houses. It looks agricultural and peaceful.

We checked out the local watering holes and selected the Trusty Trio. Most of the customers looked like farm workers. Mordy bought us drinks and talked to the barman. We ordered food and it was good. It was not fish. I noticed that the waittress looked remarkably similar to the barman. Later I got a look at the cook and he was identical! They must be twins, or perhaps it is thrins.   As the evening wore on, more people came in, they was a mixture of farmers, wagoneers and other travellers. Mordy performed and told his favourite tale about Yartar and the Succubus. Everyone else seemed to enjoy it and they gave him some coin.
I noticed one very old guy sitting at a table who seemed to be shunned. I sat with him and talked. He was a dwarf named Tundrik. He was very scarred. He told me some of the history of the town and why Dwarves are not really liked. Apparently thies was a good mining region and the dwarves had lots of mines in the Sword Mountains, to the NE of Leilon. During the Spell Plague (110-120 years ago), the bindings that help the deep evils under the mountains were broken. Slowly monsters started making there wasy to the surface. Eventually, about 20 years ago, the town was overrun and mostly destroyed. Waterdeep sent troops to drive the monsters back into the moun tains and rebuild the town. The Dwarves were blamed. Tundrick is the only Dwarf left in town. He was an old mine supervisor. He is tolerated but shunned by the locals. I asked him if he knew of Thornhold. He said that he knew of them and that the leader was grumpy but fair. I agreed with the grumpy part.   Later on I went upstairs to a room with Mir'ek. I told her what I had heard from Tundrik. Mordy only managed to insult one person, the waittress.
Day 33, morning
We had breakfast and went to Gawkroggers Supplies. There wasn't much there. I asked about buying spears or such and he suggested the Forge or Waterdeep. The town specialty is beetroot which we can buy at the Coster Collective. We then went to the Farmer's Market where there was lots of fresh produce for sale. Mir'ek and Mordy went to the Temple and I went to the bakery. Apparently Mordecai needed improving so Mir'ek bought some fancy blessing for him to give him energy and hope. I had a nice warm roll with lots of butter, I think it worked the same. It was so good that I got some bread and pastries to share with the others and to take to visit Tundrick.   On the way to Tundrick's we were attacked by 3 thugs. We really didn't want to get into trouble with the town so we tried really hard not to kill them. One nearly died but I managed to stabilise them. We took them to the Sherrif. Apparently they were known trouble makers so he threw them in jail.   I noticed a hill in the middle of town. I climbed to the top where there was the ruin of a building that looked a bit like Teledek's tower in Saltmarsh. I called the others up to join me. I wanted to explore it but it looked a bit unstabled so we left it for now.   We went past a monastery that was under repair. Mordy spoke to Chadwick Dujahr and gave him a generous donation to help with the rebuilding.   We went back to Tundrick's house. He was pleased with the pastries. He said we could get a good meal at The Shady Tree. He said we could try The Trusty Pickaxe for spears but that Waterdeep would be better. Mordy asked if we could help him out and he said that if we go to Waterdeep, he would appreciate us checking on his nephew, Floon, who was supposed to be coming to Leilon but was overdue. They were planning on salvaging some equipment from the abandoned smith stations to make bits and pieces. We could do that for him. He said we could try the Coppersmith and the Tinsmith.
Session 108, 5 July 2021

In Which we Explore the Coppersmithy

Day 33, early afternoon
We went to the Coppersmithy. The building looked in reasonable condition on the outside but was a mess inside. I was searching in the first room when I heard a scream of alarm and pain from Mordecai, who was with Mir'ek in the next room. I looked in to see him leaping around witn a long coppery thing hanging from his leg. He tried to Shocking Grasp it but zapped himself. I rushed in to help and another dark figure rushed from opposite me. Mir'ek asked the thing to let go of Mordy's leg. I got to Mordy and tried to dagger the thing off. It looked like a metallic snake. Mordy was leaping about that much that I missed the snake and got his leg. The other figure, who looked human, raised a fancy, curved dagger and struck. It looked like he was aiming for the snake but got Mordy in the chin in his backswing. Poor Mordy collapsed. I killed the thing while Mir'ek healed Mordy a little.

We were wary of the intruder but he helped Mordy up and aplogised for nicking him. His name is Sadiq El Tahir, now that sounds fancy, eh?

Mordy inspected the snake. It looked like a mechanical one that had come to life.

Sadiq told us that he is a mercenary and is trying to track down someone. He is also trying to track down someone else who may lead him to the first someone. It was all very secretive and confusing. I think he was looking for some Wizard called Duralac who worked in the old Leilon mines. He thinks he may have been responsible for breaking the seals the let the monsters out, or something like that. Anyway he will gets lots of money if he can find who he is looking for and he asked us to help him. Mir'ek and I think that some of that moeny would buy lots of weapons for the Lizardmen. Sadiq wants to get into the old mines. I said that Tundrik may know something useful.

After a while I went on searching through the rest of the house and a copper snake bit me! I yelled for help and Sadiq came and killed it for me. Mordy told me that the first one had vials of posion inside it so I took the two vials out of mine and stowed them in my pouch.
We went to the stairs. There was a suit of shiny armour with a black visor on the helmet. We put the helmet aside to take later, as it is heavy.   We went down to the basement. This was in quite good condition. There were 2 more suits of armour with the weird black visors, 4 workstations with tools and crates containing various things. We took some tools and other bits and pieces and headed back to Tundrik.
Day 33, evening
We gave Tundrik the tools and told him about the snakes. He seemed quite interested in those and said they could be valuable to the right person. He was also interested in our description of the helmet visor so we said we would bring one tomorrow.   Sadiq interrogated him about Wizards, Duralac and mine entrances. Tundrik said he didn't know of Duralak and all the mine entrances were closed up.   We went back to the Trusty Trio and had dinner. We learned that Sadiq comes from Askaria, in the east and that Duralak is a gnomish name and he may have been an apprentice to Sadiq's main quarry.
Day 34, morning
Mordy got up early and organised some workers and a horse and cart to clear out the Copersmithy and take it all to Tundrik.
We set off to the Tinsmithy. Mordy wandered away. The Tinsmith building was half collapsed. We waited for Mordy before going inside and eventually he turned up, running and muttering about them all being dead. He had gone to check on the workers. The cart was partially packed but there was no one around so he went to the basement and found them all dead, by sword. We hurried back, and found 4 bodies in the basement. Since the cart had not been emptied, I doubted it was a robbery so I started to search carefully around the room. I found a sliding panel. Sadiq pushed on the panel...
Session 109, 2 August 2021

In Which we Find a Hidden Workshop

As Sadiq pushed on the panel, the two sets or armour began toraise their swords! It was a very tough battle in which Sadiq made some fancy sword manouvres, Mordy made good use of Shocking Grasp and Ray of Frost, I dropped my sword but also got in some good hits and Mir'ek took a while to warm up. Eventually we defeated the armours and Mir'ek made us all feel a little better with a group hug.   Back to the panel... Sadiq slid it open. There was a room with a dusty desk with papers, a weird tripod on a stone pedastal, a table with pieces of shattered gems around it and another large, stone pedastal with a stone and metal archway.   Sadiq was interested in the papers on the desk and took then. He thinks this room must have been Duralak's workshop. Mordy walked through the arch and nothing bad happened.   We loaded the bodies of the workers onto the cart. Mordecai & Mir'ek took them into town while Sadiq & I went to visit Tundrik.   The stablemaster was surprisingly understanding about the dead. Mordy & Mir'ek took them to the temple of Chauntea and made a donation.   Tundrik said that the Coppersmith, Lielvaren, was a gnome and not well liked. This fits with Duralak being a gnome. Lielvaren was working with the mine supervisors to improve the mining tools. Tundrik thought he perished in the disaster, as he spent a lot of time in the mines and wasn't seen after it.   Tundrik was very interested in the visors (adamantine). We went back for the suits of armour. He paid us 1000gp for all the stuff we brought to him. He agreed that the coloured shards were gems and said it would have taken a lot of force to shatter them.   We met up with the others and went to the Monastery to buy some Healing Potions.   Everyone else then went to the Sherrif to make a report but I went to the Trusty Trio. It wasn't much fun by myself so I had a couple of drinks.
Day 34, evening
The others told me that the Sherrif didn't throw them in jail but did tell them not to go poking around. Apparently there weren't many gnomes in the town, back in the day. Mordy told me that Sadiq has another name, Farard or something. I guess that's like me being Frikki and Anya.
Session 110, 16 August 2021

In Which we Explore the Tin Smithy

Sadiq went off to bed while Mordy & Mir'ek discussed theology and mentioned that maybe Lielvaren & Duralak were the same gnome. I wasn't feeling too good and Mir'ek carried me to bed.
Day 35 morning
Sadiq didn't come down to breakfast. I checked on him afterwards and found that he wasn't in his room and that his stuff was all gone too. Looked like he'd cleared out on us with the notes from the workshop. I did find one piece of parchment that he had missed:

I called the others and we discussed this:
  • 10,000gp to find the Wizard Everharad
  • Not supposed to say the Wizard's name! Oops!
  • Mention of Valkemek could be related to Mir'ek's stone.
  • Mordy knows a little of the Zhentarium - political faction associated with underhanded politics; uses political influence rather than direct.
  • Who is Dagult Nirembor?
  • Floon is familiar, connected to Leilon.
  • Who or what are Xanathar Guild & Bregan D'aerthe?

Mir'ek and I went to ask Tundrik about some of the names while Mordy went to the Sherrif and Mayor Proudbody. The Mayor said DN was a former lord on the Neverwinter council. He had been ejected from the council amongst rumours of embezzlement but they were unproven. DN had voted to send help to Leilon when the evil escaped the mines.

I managed to upset Tundrik because I had forgotten that Floon was his nephew that we were supposed to be looking for! Oh dear! Lucky I took pastries!   We then set off for Rygnyg's Timsmithy.   We went inside. The ground floor was a mess. There was a metal, oval mirror that made me look fat, near the stairs. Some centipedes attacked us and one poisoned me badly.

There was a small living area downstairs with a diary on a table. The pages were disintegrating but Mordy read:
Is TK my friend Tundrik? Sounds like they were collecting people or something to experiment on?

Mir'ek decided to try out the old bed while Mordy found that there was a secret entrance behind the bookshelf. We opened it to a room with 4 cells and a tunnel leading from it. There were several skeletons. Most of them looked dwarven. Were these the subjects? Suddenly we were attacked by rats - they were weird rats that multiplied very quickly. Just as we were about to be overrun, Mordecai did a big Thunderwave which killed them all and almost killed me too! Mir'ek gave me a Healing Potion and I came around.

We went into the tunnel and headed left. There was a cavern with more dwarven skeletons. The tunnel continued.   Further up was the biggest, nastiest scorpion ever! It was very nasty and after it took big chunks from Mir'ek, we all tried to keep our distance. Mir'ek slipped passed it while we distracted and slowly killed it with bolts and Thunderwaves.   Meanwhile, Mir'ek found a boulder that was emitting a yellowy, greenish light and also arcing little lightning bolts. She picked it up and moved it around and found that it seemed to create some sort of illusion that hid another passage behind it. I went down into the other passage but there were some weird skeletons there so I went back to the others.   We decided we needed to rest before going further and Mordy talked Mir'ek into leaving the stone where she found it.
Session 111, 1 September 2021

In Which we Explore the Rainbow

We went back to the ladder up. There were old sacks that smelled pundent and aome thick old ropes. I went up to the trapdoor but it was too heavy. Mir'ek went up and pushed it open. It came out in some bushes to the SE of the Tinsmithy. There were some hooks nearby that could have been used with the ropes?   We went back to The Trusty Trio. There was a minstrel called Estle and I spoke to her hoping I would hear some useful news. All she had was the same old stories out of Yartar... and then she starting questioning my skin colour! I went upstairs but apparently she spoke to M&M afterwards because they came up and sprinkled water all over me in case I was a demon! I got very upset and they complained that I didn't tell them everything about me but I don't know everything about them. Anyway, I told them what Nola told me, I am a Tiefling and I showed them my little horns, that are starting to grow back. I thought they were going to not be my friends for a while but they haven't thrown me out yet.
Day 36 morning
We had breakfast and then went to our secret trapdoor entrance. We went back to where we were yesterday and had a better look at the skeletons in the hidden tunnel. It looks like there was some sort of battale there because there were burn marks and a big cave in. The skeletons were very weird, they had big long heads and long bodies. Maybe these were the things that were broke out?

We then went S of the cellar. There was another scorpion but eventually we found that it was just an outside skin. There were lots of little plinths around and many of them were in different colours. There was a sort of rainbow of colours around the first one. Mordy stepped onto one of them and got teleported to the scorpion one and he also got zapped. After experimenting, we found we could use them to transport ourselves passed portculli if we used them in rainbow colour order.   Eventually we found a long tunnel. It led to a small cavern and nearby, through a broken wall, was a very fancy mosaic floor with 6 crypts in niches around the outside. They were all empty except one. They looked large human sized. The one that had a skeleton had a different, sharper, more angular art style on its lid. It looked like the skeleton had been holding something but it had been removed. We can't see any other entrances so I wondered how you got in or out before the wall was broken.
Session 112, 20 September 2021

In Which the Earth Moves for Mordecai & Mir'ek

We went S from the mosaic to a large cavern area. On the other side of it were worked rooms. There was a table with old blood and lots of blood splashes and drag marks on the floor. A nearby table held butchering tools.   Exploring further, we found a room with broken barrels and another room with 24 empty smallish-human sized coffins. Mordecai read some text on the wall, written in blood. We wondered if it referred to the Valkamec stone?

N was a double locked door which I easily mastered. Inside were two posts burning with a pinkish flame and a basin with a dark crimson liquid. Mordecai walked in and the stones on the floor started to move and then attack him. He got some of the liquid in a cup but fell on the way out, spilling the liquid over Mir'ek. Mir'ek went in and filled her flask while I dragged Mordy out of the room. Mir'ek drank some of the liquid, made terrible noises and then said it was berry juice. Mordy threw her is mug and she filled and drank that but she fell over on the way out and the stones attacked her. Mordy dragged her out. Mir'ek encouraged Mordy to drink some. I think it made him feel a bit better.
I went down another passage and saw another of those big, scary night scorpions! I got out of there and shut the door. Meanwhile, Mir'ek had gone looking for me and in her own special way, had gone down a different passage. Mordy and I found her.

We came to a room in two parts, with stairs joining the upper and lower sections. In the upper section was a plinth with a weird statue. It looked a bit like a bird at first as it had wings but it also had horns and a weird face. The back of it was not well formed. Maybe a demon? There was a globe on a lecturn in front of the statue. There were symbols and shapes on or in it that were moving slowly. It was about 18" across. Mordecai recognised it as a planar globe map and reckoned it was very valuable.   I investigated the S of the room where there was a green-glowing boulder in the front of a door. There were creepy sounds possibly coming from behind the door. There was some rubble in the SW corner that we could scramble through. We passed through a room with several beds, some destroyed and some just old.
We found another room very simlar to the two-sectioned room. There was the same statue and a lecturn, this time with a book on it. There were lots of sorpions running through the room. Mordecai cast Ray of Frost to pause the scorpions and grabbed the tome.
We went back to the first statue room. Mordecai said it is a spell book but it has additional references and notes regarding bindings and unbindings.
Session 113, 22 September 2021

In Which Mir'ek Grapples for Love

The tome had a creepy cover with the name D a Daresz.   Mir'ek said that the screams are words but she can't distinguish what they are. They sounded like screams to Mordy & I.   Back to the second statue room, we were trying to get to the statue plinth to access to the 2 doors near it. We brought a bed from the barracks room but the big scorpion heard us and approached. I told Mir'ek to run but then Mordy started to fight it so we all joined in. Mir'ek copped the full brunt of its anger, but we killed it much quicker than the last one.   After a short rest, we got over the scorpion river to the plinth and to the S door. I unlocked it to find a fancy bedroom, old and dusty but in very good condition. There were some books and Mordy took a few. There were 3 chests, the N one was trapped and locked but I'm pretty good with my picks now. It contained:

  • 870gp
  • Agate pin (26gp)
  • Turquoise pendant (20gp)
  • Onyx inset hand crossbow (68gp)
  • 3 greyish white potions
  • Wand with cracked blue/purple gemstone
  • Set of shackles
  • Vial of sparkling, fine sand
The S chest had boring clothes in dark colours.   We then went to the N door, which was a workshop of some kind. There were all kinds of tools that may have been used for making things, repairs and/or tinkering.   We went back to the cavern area and followed the bloody drag marks. Behind a natural pillar was the biggest pile of skeletons I had ever seen! They were humanoid and had bite and claw marks. There were about 200 and although they varied in age, none were recent.   We decided it was time to go. I went back for a final look at the mosaic crypt while M&M went to pick up the Planar Map. Now something weird must have happened because they took ages so eventually I went back to them. Mir'ek was behaving very strangely, saying that Mordy wasn't real or alive or something. Then she grappled him! She said she was doing it out of love. She wanted to see him bleed. I had no idea what was going on but I thought maybe if I helped, she would be happy and let him go. So I pulled my dagger to nick his finger and then Mordy freaked out and Thunderwaved Mir'ek and I. He also seemed to grow a bit but that was the least of my concerns. Mir'ek then pinned him to the floor. I got my rope out and tried to lasso Mir'ek while she was manacling Mordy. I missed. I tried to persuade Mir'ek that we should all go outside as I thought maybe the screams were affecting her. But Mordy Shocking Grasped me! Mir'ek tried to knock Mordy out and he tried to run away. She succeeded with her second hit. I put the Planar Map in my special bag.
Session 114, 27 September 2021

In Which Mordecai is Exorcised

We headed out. Mir'ek dragged and pushed Mordy most of the way. We successfully navigated the rainbow backwards and went up via the ladder. We used the ropes to pull Mordecai up. I went to the stables and hired a horse & cart to carry Mordy back. First we took him the Dujahr Monastery. Mir'ek said she had sensed something undead inside Mordy. Mr Dujahr said the Temple of Chauntea would be better so we took him there and saw the Priest Imdarr.

Mir'ek said she thinks Mordy maybe possessed by a ghost. Mir'ek went to eat and Imdarr's & I ungagged and unmanacled the unconscious Mordecai. An Acolyte attended to poor Mordy's cuts and scrapes. After a while Mordy came around and then Mir'ek came back. There was a lot of discussion and arguments about good friends and bad friends. It was boring so I tried to go to sleep in the corner. Eventually they shut up and we all went to sleep.
by Sophie-Alice
Day 37 morning

There is more discussion with Imdarr. He casts a spell and agrees that there is "something not right, something hidden" with Mordecai. I wondered if it was the influence of the Valkamec stone. Imdarr said it was very, very evil and we shouldn't be carrying it around, but he didn't seem to think it was related to Mordecai's problem. I asked if he knew anything more about the stone and he said we need a senior priest or a wizard.   Mir'ek was still not happy. Imdarr said he can perform an exorcism but it is expensive and dangerous. Imdarr said ge detected something undead in Mordy, but that he radiates life and power. Mordecai volunteered to be exorcised in the hope that it would fix things with Mir'ek. We spent 750gp of the lizardmen weapon money.
Preparations were made and then Imdarr started. It was awful to watch. Mordecai screamed in pain. Blood came out of his eyes and then these lightning bolt scars came out of his left eye and moved over him, especially around his heart. The scars were very angry. Then it was over and Imdarr said that the thing is out but Mordy was probably dead. I screamed at Mir'ek to heal him. She did and he coughed up lots of blood and gunk and came round. All the lightning scars were still on him. I noticed that the blood was coming from the centre of his eye, which I thought was weird. Imdarr said the evil must have been deep within him.   We let him rest for a while but then Mir'ek had to check for herself and she said that there is still something attached to him! All that for nothing! Mordy, naturally enough, is peeved with Mir'ek.
Day 38 morning

Mordecai said the tome from the lecturn is probably valuable. I dragged them I decided to visit Tundrik and tell him what we had found under the Metalsmithy. He advised me to overlay the above and below ground maps. I asked him about Daresz but he didn't know that name. I thought the Mayor might know some of the town history but he wasn't home. He has gone to Waterdeep.   I spent some time working on the maps.
We eventually all went back to The Trusty Trio and I got Mir'ek to Detect Magic on our items. The potions (abjuration), wand(evocation), shackles(abjuration), unknown thing and Planar Map were all magic. We took 1 potion each and divvied up the remaining gold. The rest of the things are in my special bag. I was really interested in the shackles and I spent some time trying to work them out.   Mordy and I discussed playing cards for some items but he wanted to include the thing from Yartar. He got some cards out and he's pretty good so I'm not gonna go there. He looked at the books we found instead.   I dragged them all to the wizard's house on the hill. We couldn't get in but maybe that was where the S stairway came up.   We went back to the Inn but as we opened the door, there was a shower of red, dead silence and then screams. A lady had her throat cut right in front of us! The culprit ran for the door and we jumped on him! Mir'ek then attempted to save the lady but she was too dead. It was that Minstrel Estle. I must admit she was pretty annoying. While I was there trying to help Mir'ek, I just had a little feel to see if she had anything that needed saving. People get all funny about these things and someone saw me so then they grabbed me. You can't reason with some people about these things so I didn't cause a fuss.
Session 115, 18 October 2021

In Which Mordecai is Deputised

Mordecai held on tight to the murderer. The crowd were screaming for the murderer to be hung... and me! Luckily Mordy managed to calm the crowd until the Sherrif, Belasaurus Cutton, arrived. She took us all to the jail, but Mordecai managed to persuade her to let me go. I guess I owe him one for that! She was so impressed with Mordy that she made him her deputy while she went off to get Mayor Proudbody back from Waterdeep.

The prisoner was huddled in the back of the cell. He didn't respond at first but then made a break for freedom. Mordy slowed him with Ray of Frost so we were able to catch him and put him back in the cell. He was human and looked like a normal villager.
Day 38 evening
After dinner, we sent Mordy to The Trusty Trio to investigate.
From the bartender:
  • Man was a semi-regular
  • Drinks alone
From patrons:
  • Man is a local wood worker
  • Has been coming to listen to Estle and seemed to admire her
  • Name is Grindol
  • After an injury, hasn't been able to do his usual work so has been doing odd jobs
There were conflicting reports from the crowd about whether he dropped the knife or the knife was already on the floor.   When Mordy came back, we checked Grindol and found a large scar from shoulder to elbow.
Day 39 morning
Grindol was awake and more talkative. He genuinely didn't seem to remember killing Estle. He was very upset. He went very pale, with trembling lips and eyes full of tears, then stumbled backwards. Other things he said:
  • The previous day he had done some work on a bench for the Widow D'Gilgo
  • Has been working on his house
  • His house is on the E side of town
  • He has recently been having some blackouts
I asked Mir'ek if she could look inside him for bad things but she said he was okay.   Mordecai stayed with the prisoner while Mir'ek & I went to Grindol's house. The E end has been repaired and contained very basic furniture and belongings. In the kitchen was a trapdoor. We eventually levered it open using a broom. It didn't look like it was often used. Downstairs was a small basement and then a partially collapsed opening to a larger area. We went through and found a tunnel at the back. We went down there and into some mud, which grabbed me! We both tried to get it off me but it was very hard and eventually I got it off but knocked myself out in the process. Mir'ek brought me around and we left.   We went back to the jail and I washed.
Session 116, 15 November 2021

In Which We Hold Off the Mob

Later in the afternoon, Mordecai patrolled the town and was approached by some locals, lead by a woman named Nissy. They wanted Grindol hung. After talking nicely failed to calm them, Deputy Mordecai threatened to burn down their homes. This had the desired effect but showed the resentment around town that nothing appeared to be being done to serve justice.   We suspected a mob may appear that night so we disguised Grindol and took him to the Monastery. Mir'ek and I stayed with him while Mordy went to man the Sherrif's Office. After we'd eaten, I went out and stealthily observed. A large mob gathered. Mordecai told them that Grindol was in the mines. This befuddled the mob and they slowly dispersed, eventually even Nissy.
Day 40 morning
We did some research into Grindol and his home. We found that the house had previously been occupied by a young married couple, Jayro & Lyra Nightwall. Their baby son had mysteriously vanished around the time of the town's troubles. The parents had left town thereafter. Grindol had bought the house for 50 gp one year ago and had been repairing it.
Day 40 late afternoon
Sherrif Cutton and Mayor Proudbody returned from Waterdeep. We spoke to the Sherrif about all that had hapened and that we suspected something evil was influencing Grindol. We then went to speak to the Mayor, who had the pleasure of the company of Nissy & Co. After they left, we begged the Mayor for more time so we could continue our investigation below Grindol's house. He gave us 24 hours.   We set off immediately and went down the trapdoor and along the tunnel. Mordy slipped and ended up in the nasty mud but he magically washed it off and that worked. A little further in we found a demon skeleton like we had seen under the Tinsmithy. A little further on there appeared to be spikes growing out of the ground.
Session 117, 10 January 2022

In Which We are Heroes, at last

The spikes were not natural. They were made of various materieals and imbedded into the ground, roughly 2' high. They looked brittle so I asked Mir'ek to try smashing them. It worked but we were attacked by Stirges. We got a few bites but killed several of them.

There was a lot of rubbish after the spikes. Peering further down we could see some skeletons, including a flaming one. There was also some purple light coming from one side. Mordecai cast several spells at the skeletons and grew himself some horns. When we went closer, they seems to be dead skeletons. Mordy took a large axe from the biggest one.   Mordy then turned on me and attacked me! I ran away but I thought Mir'ek was really responsible for giving Mordy these ideas. Then Mir'ek tried to grapple Mordy and things turned bad between them. I retreated back to the edge of the mud. When Mordy got close I tried to talk to him. Eventually we felt better about each otrher and I said maybe there was something in the cavern that did that to us and also affected Grindol. Mordy and I tried taking the silvery dust. Mir'ek wouldn't eat dust. We went back to the cavern. It went okay for a little while but then Mir'ek started going crazy again. She was distracted by ghosts pulsing in and out. Mordy's Shocking Grasp seemed to dispel one but my crossbow bolt went straight through another. Mir'ek attacked one, it disappeared but touched her and she went all flourescent!
I wandered off a little further and saw a ragged human figure around the corner. The area stunk really bad. I went back to tell the others and they cam to have a look. The guy looked quite old. Mir'ek picked him up. He was in a very bad way so she healed him (but not me).

His name was Randall. We took him to the temple and Mordy went to get the Mayor. The Mayor knew of Randall Nightwall who disappeared many years ago.

He told us what he remembered:
I was watching the dwarves. I was in a room with light. A little creature was doing something to me.
It's a bit fragmented but I remember being chained to a wall. There was a big earthquake. The chain came loose and I ran. Demons chased me. There were demons and ghosts all around me
I wondered if the small creature was the gnome?   We pleaded for leniency for Grindol since there were evil things under the house affecting him. It was granted and the house and more passages will be sealed.   Mir'ek's fluoresence was slowly fading.
