Anders Solmor Character in Faerûn | World Anvil

Anders Solmor

Councilman Andrews Solmor

Anders is a young and slim, rakish but good-looking young man with sharp features and a charming smile that fronts a sunny and optimistic disposition.

The Solmors were the very first family to formally settle in Saltmarsh, and the first to start commercialising their fishing operations. This made them comparatively wealthy quite quickly and, at one time, the family claimed ownership over roughly half the land and buildings on the southern side of the river. Over time, as Saltmarsh flourished, most was sold to support the fleet in the face of increased competition and losses to piracy and other dangers of the sea, although the family still owns half a dozen buildings in the town, including one to the east that houses many of the manor's servants, cooks and gardeners.

After the abrupt untimely death of his mother, Petra, a little over two years ago, Anders became sole heir the to the family’s fleet of fishing boats, and he has aggressively sought to modernise and expand the business. Brash and inexperienced, his exuberant forays into sometimes wildly speculative trade opportunities have made him a local celebrity. He sees the potential for profit and opportunity in every challenge but is too young and naive to temper his decisions with a realistic assessment of the risks.

Nevertheless, some investments have been inadvertently wise. Expanding his assets from just fishing by purchasing several trading vessels has allowed Solmor to largely dictate prices locally, and he offers better rates to the other fisheries in town to sell to him since his own catch brings in more profit. However, this has given rise to escalating tensions with the Oweland family, as Solmor is now directly competing in the export of Saltmarsh's products, which has heavily impacted their profits.

Nevertheless, everyone involved in the town's fishing industry (and not employed by Oweland) supports Anders, and his energy, ambition and rash enthusiasm fr trying new things have made him something of a folk hero on the docks. On the other hand, his open opposition to smuggling and support of Eliandor Fireborn's efforts to stamp it out has made him quite unpopular with those who make a healthy living from it.

Upon his mother’s passing, Anders also inherited her seat on the Council, but has since been re-elected and, at 25, is the youngest person to have ever held a seat on it. He is considered a Progressive in in Saltmarsh's political dichotomy, although he has a tendency to temporise according to how the matter at hand may impact his business, but does not always make well-advised decisions.

Anders...
  • respects Eda Oweland for her age, wisdom and family history in the community, although he is a commercial rival whose decisions have had a marked impact on her business;
  • admires Eliander Fireborn for his ardent desire to stamp out piracy and smuggling, having been convinced by Fireborn that these harm his business prospects, and tends to support him more often than not;
  • likes Gellan Primewater for his ostentatious style, and is easily influenced by Primewater's bombastic manner;
  • dislikes Manistrad Copperlocks for her brusque personality, disdain for people he respects and the town itself, and indifference to anything not self-serving.
