Lands End
Lands End is a small frontier community to the far north of the Dutchy of Minaris. For several generations, the Dutchy of Minaris and its Kingdom Aul'darin pushed north along the far coast taking advantage of the fertile soil and plentiful game. The lands were well protected, but the push north was halted at the Swordfish River. before another push north could be mounted, attacks on Aul'darin and the Pale Wars strained the dutchies resources. since the Pale Wars, Lands End has become the northern outpost and the dutchy has yet to truly recover to loss of many troops and its founding kingdom. The town is home to some 1300 residences as well as 200 garrisoned troops and more recently about 200 dwarven workers and miners, most are working folk and frontiersmen, all trying to survive, this leads to low petty crime and thous that do not contribute to the community being shunned. although petty crime is rare, organized smuggling of illegal and illicit goods happens as the lands around Lands End provide great cover for such activities.
Demographics
Being a border town, it has a higher than usual number of orcs and elves. Unlike other towns in the Minaras Dutchy halfling are more uncommon. A large contigent of dwarven workers and miners have also recently taken up residence in town.
Government
Baron Durius leads the region although he rarely interferes with the day to day running of the town. The towns true leadership comes from a town council.
Defences
The high quarter is a wall hill ridge that the local towns folk take refuge in if the need arrises.
Industry & Trade
Fishing and whaling are the towns primary industries although most money that comes into town come from adventurers and the like hoping to seek their fortunes at one of the many ancient and not so ancient ruins that dot the landscape across the river. more recently a group of dwarven prospectors descovers silver in the ogre hills and have begun preparation to mine it.
Districts
The town is divided into 4 quarters, the docks lie west of town in a cove at the mouth of the Rangnar River, between the main town and the dock is the low quarter were much of the construction is ramshakle and temporary. The main town is on a small rise above the river and the high quarter located on a ridge above the main town that includes the towns commons, temple and townhall as well as the barracks.
Guilds and Factions
Saltmarsh’s future rests in the hands of two of the factions represent the opposing sentiments that have grown in town in recent years.
The traditionalist faction is an alliance of the prominent fishing families and merchants in town, along with the workers who rely on those industries for a living. The traditionalists remember the terrible times during the Quelm Princes’ raids and have no desire to see the crown’s ambitions lead to open war. The smugglers who operate in the area tend to be traditionalists. Most pose as merchants and rely on their local contacts to move goods through the region without interference from the town guard or royal agents. Smuggling has long been an easy way to make money in Lands End, and locals generally look the other way, seeing it as a victimless crime.
The loyalists consist of newcomers who arrived from the south, loyal to Duke. They feel that the town should focus on becoming a useful asset to the crown, believing that Baron Durius should take a more active role and value the good of the dutchy before the good of the region. The town guard, the dwarves, and the local farmers are generally loyalists.
The loyalists care about security. They want to keep Minaras's enemies at bay while ensuring law and order. They see smuggling as a key problem, as it enriches the Kingdom of Quelm at the cost of the royal treasury and the efforts of honest merchants.
Architecture
Much of the archetecture is heavily influeced by the towns origens as an outpost for the kingdom of Aul'Daran with many of the older building made as stone based totur stylings, in the high quarter most building are stone and in the low quarter and docks materials vary depending on what is available.
