(a.k.a. de Wendeval, de Wendenal)

William de Wenneval was appointed Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the Royal Forests by Count John in 1191, to succeed Roger de Lacy, Baron of Pontefract, who served from 1190.   During the 1180s William served as John's dapifer (steward) and seneschal; at this time John was Lord of Ireland.   From 1191 William is also joint constable (with Ralph Murdac) of Nottingham Castle on behalf of Count John, following the Count's seizure of the royal castle.

Personal history

Little is known of de Wenneval other than his term as sheriff and his previous role as John's dapifer.   After the Siege of Nottingham and the Great Council he disappears from the historical record. Andreas of Marchiennes, a Benedictine monk and hsitorian from the abbey of Marchiennes in Hainault, believed Richard had John's dapifer flayed alive following the siege of Nottingham. This may refer to de Wenneval. (Source: note 2, Gillingham, John: Richard I, p. 282. (Yale University Press, 2002)
