Robert de Romille
Robert de Romille was an Breton adventurer who was granted lands around Bolton in Cravenshire by William Rufus, which became the Honour of Skipton, and the founder of the House of Romilly.
De Romille's lands came in two major grants. Shortly after the compilation of Domesday Book, in the early 1090s, he was granted 77 carucates from the estate centred on Bolton. After 1102 he was granted many of the lands of the Aire Gap forfeited by Roger of Poitou. He moved the caput (headquarters) of his fee to Skipton, where he built a motte and bailey castle on the cliffs above Eller Beck.
