Gaeilge (Irish) is a Goidelic language that is the first language of most people in Ireland, and is also spoken in Man and parts of Scotland.
Old Irish (c. 600-900 AD), Middle Irish (c. 900-1200 AD) and Classical Irish (c. 1200-1750 AD) are the forms spoken through the Middle Ages. Middle Irish is the descendent of Scottish Gaelic and Manx.
The Lord's Prayer
Ár n-Athair |
Our Father |
Ár n-Athair atá ar neamh, |
Our Father, which art in heaven |
Go naofar d'ainim, |
Hallowed be thy name |
Go dtagfadh do ríocht, |
Thy kingdom come |
Go ndéantar do thoil ar an talamh |
Thy will be done |
mar a dhéantar ar neamh. |
On Earth as it is in Heaven |
Ár n-arán laethúil tabhair dúinn inniu, |
Give us this day our daily bread, |
agus maith dúinn ár bhfiacha |
and forgive us our debts |
mar a mhaithimidne dár bhféichiúna féin |
as we forgive our debtors |
(Ach ná lig sinn i gcathú, |
(Do not let us be tempted, |
ach saor sinn ó olc,) |
but free us from evil) |
