Charles (a.k.a. the Great)

King of the Franks (768-814), King of the Lombards (774-814) and Emperor of the Romans (800-814). He is considered one of the Nine Worthies.
Charlemagne (Charles the Great) united most of western Europe for the first time since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. His reign saw the Carolingian Renaissance.
Deeds of chivalry during the reign of Charlemagne form the basis of the legend cycle known as the Matter of France.
