Angels and Devils XXV

"Careful around here," the young man next to Lukan said. "There are fey crossings all over this forest."   Lukan nodded, following his companion's lead. He and Jonah had never been friends during their training, but they graduated at the same time and ended up both being assigned to the same place, so they'd become much closer over the past few years.   "Why they're making us check this place is beyond me," Jonah complained. "If we stumble into the Feywild, we'll be ripped apart."   "Maybe," Lukan said. "You're a decent fighter at least."   "I suppose we've got your dragon too," Jonah commented. As if on cue, Evae swooped down to them.   "See anything up there, Evae?" Lukan asked.   "Not a thing! I think your eyes are better than mine, though, so I can't guarantee anything."   "Maybe I should go up with you," Lukan offered. He looked at Jonah. "If you're okay with that?"   Jonah nodded. "The sooner we can leave this place, the better."   "Be back soon!" Lukan climbed onto Evae's back and they rose above the trees. He looked around, and for a moment, he saw nothing. Then, a vine-like dragon shot up above the trees as well. Lukan's eyes widened and Evae immediately dove back down.   "Do you think they spotted us?" Evae asked.   "Not sure," Lukan replied. "But we should take a closer look."   Evae flew quickly through the trees, approaching a small cabin at the edge of the forest. Lukan watched closely, but didn't see any movement. He started to suggest they should turn back when he heard crying. After a moment, he hopped down and moved further forward. Through a window, he saw a short woman with pointed ears and delicate wings pick up a child--perhaps two years old, Lukan thought. He swallowed nervously and returned to Evae.   "We should get back to Jonah," he said. "But don't tell him about this, okay?"   "Got it." Evae waited for Lukan to mount, then flew back the way she came.
