Angels and Devils XXII

Temerity watched the procession from a ways away. She didn't have an official guard post, but she still wanted to keep an eye on things.   As Eisna came into view, she heard the usual chants of "long live Emperor Eisna," but they were accompanied by murmurs of disapproval. She frowned, a bit tense as it continued. Just this, then the start of the race, then the feast--after that, no more public appearances.   Her eyes stayed fixed on Eisna and his immediate surroundings. Something was bothering her, but she wasn't sure what.   The procession continued. What was it? Why couldn't she put her finger on it? Something was wrong, very wrong, why-   Movement, heading towards the procession. Where are the guards? She realized it too late.   An arrow shot at Eisna, missing him by an inch. He stopped, shocked, and at once, Hummingbird dove down towards him as a wave of people rushed forward. They reached him at the same time, and Temerity stared frozen as Eisna and Hummingbird vanished into a violent mob.   She pulled herself together and tried to get through the crowd, to no avail. As she moved around the crowd to find a better spot, there was a loud hiss and Hummingbird broke out of the mob, dripping blood. Eisna was on their back, and if he was hurt, Temerity couldn't see it. They shot away from the crowd slower than they should have, and Temerity noticed just how damaged Hummingbird was. Scales had been torn off, two of their eyes were bleeding, and they had several other injuries that were making it harder for them to fly.   They weren't fast enough.   Another arrow shot after them and struck Hummingbird in the neck. There was a shriek, and both of them started plummeting towards the ground.   "No!" Temerity threw out a hand and Eisna fell more slowly. Hummingbird continued to plummet. Temerity ran to where they were falling.   Hummingbird had reached the ground by the time she got there, and Eisna reached it as she arrived. She grabbed his hand and started pulling him away. The mob was rushing towards them.   "Hummingbird!" Eisna shouted, resisting Temerity's pull.   "We have to go!" Temerity yelled back.   "I'm not leaving them!"   "They're dead!" Temerity pulled Eisna around to face her. "I'm sorry. My spell should have caught them, but they... They're dead, Eisna. We have to go now."   Eisna looked desperately at his dragon, waiting for some sort of movement. It didn't come. He let Temerity pull him away.   They ran through side streets, steering away from any noise. They didn't stop until they were outside the city.   "Catch your breath," Temerity said. "But we have to get farther away."   Eisna said nothing. He was breathing heavily and his eyes were empty. Temerity was about to speak when she heard voices.   "There he is!" A man in plain clothing with a half-blunt sword stepped towards them, followed by an archer and half a dozen others. Temerity's eyes narrowed.   "Who's that with him?" the archer asked.   "Who cares? She helped him escape. Kill her too!" the one with the sword said.   "Kill us?" Temerity seethed. "I don't think so. Die."   The one with the sword seized up and fell to the ground. The others murmured fearfully, but held their ground.   "All of you," Temerity said. "Die!"   Red light started burning in the others' eyes. They screamed, and soon fell to the ground as well. Temerity turned back to Eisna.   "Come on. Before more of them find us." She took his hand and led him away from the city.
