Angels and Devils XXI

With Lukan gone, Temerity's days were much more boring. The only things that strayed from routine were the executions. There'd been more of them over the past few years. Things were getting more dangerous for outsiders. But life went on, and soon, people were preparing for the annual Narion's Day celebration.   The streets had been blocked off and lined with water tents and food stand for the footraces. The shortest race would be a brief sprint, but the longest would be a multi-week cross-country event that went through all of Brimera's major cities. The starting point rotated cities each year. This year, it was Melodis' turn, and as it was customary for the emperor to announce the start of the race, Temerity knew Eisna would be in the city.   The Order of Brim had their hands full keeping things under control, so it wasn't hard for Temerity to slip away. She made her way slowly to the race's starting point; Eisna probably wouldn't be there yet, but she could check. As she was walking, she suddenly heard gasps and saw people looking up. She followed their gazes to see a long, vine-like form in the sky and smiles. If Hummingbird was here, Eisna had to be close.   She kept walking, but before getting much farther, she was pulled down a side street. She looked over and smiled.   "Happy Narion's Day, your grace," she said with a bow.   Eisna rolled his eyes. "Such formality," he said. He kissed her, then smiled back. "Happy Narion's Day, Tem."   "How long are you here?"   "Well, the race lasts a month," Eisna said. "I might as well stay and keep an eye on things here until it's done."   Temerity's eyes shone. "Are you sure you can stay away that long?"   "It's worth it to see you smile like that. If anything comes up, Hummingbird can get me back fast."   "That's certainly true. Well, I won't complain about you being around that long."   Eisna laughed, then sighed. "Unfortunately, I do have some things I have to do today, with the race and all."   "And there's a feast tonight. I'll be there, but I won't exactly be with you."   Eisna nodded. "But after the celebrations are over, I'm all yours."   "Good." Temerity smiled. "I best let you get going."   Eisna kissed her again. "I'll see you soon."   She nodded, and a moment later he was gone, disappearing on the back of his dragon.
