The Malukard Empire

During the age of Arcanum and another 700 years after that fact there was once a seat at the Coven of Maran for the Necromancy school of magic. In 713 AF this station was taken by the human necromancer Malukard who rose to his position because of his mastery over the forces of death, far exceeding any others in his field.   But human lives are short and in his hubris, ambition and pursuit of power Malukard unlocked the ancient secrets of lichdom, thought lost in the Fall of Arcanum.   In his twilight years Malukard was already extremely powerful, far surpassing the rest of the Coven, but he was only human and he wished to continue his research by achieving the extended life his elven peers possessed, but in his pleas and attempts to extend his life were blocked at every turn by his peers that preached caution into such dangerous magics.   But Malukard’s pursuit was all consuming, so he turned against the other members of the Coven and in secret began planning his transformation and growing his followers. Finally Malukard would achieve lichdom, becoming even more powerful in the process. Knowing that the other Members of the Coven would not approve of his actions he sought to take control of Maran, removing any opposition to his research.   And so a war broke out in the city. Even the combined efforts of the Coven of Maran were barely enough to stop Malukard. After the loss of many lives Malukard was defeated, but he was far too powerful and crafty to be destroyed. His soul returned to his phylactery, a hulking suit of obsidian steel and so he rose to fight again.   The remaining members of the Coven and people of Maran were forced to flee, evacuating the city, leaving it to Malukard’s reign. In the 72 years that followed Malukard built his empire calling forth legions of undead to serve his bidding as they spread across Hepsut. All while Malukard continued his research and pursuit of power, lost to madness.   In 785 AF, in a final attempt to bring an end to Malukard the remaining members of the Coven of Maran gathered together an alliance of the people of Hepsut and launched an invasion against the forces of Malukard. In a climactic battle, when all looked dire, the young Archmage of Chronomancy, Oramis Sigurn, called upon the divine favour of Rhea, the Goddess of magic, and ripped Malukard from his armour, his phylactery, allowing his soul to be ripped away and banished to the void. His armour and phylactery is said to still reside in the secret vaults of the city, unable to be destroyed but too dangerous to be seen by the world.   To this day the City of Maran must undergo annual magical repairs to the city's wards to compensate for the energy required in the banishment of Malukard, and to prevent the return of Malukard or the rise of someone like him the study of necromantic magic is outlawed across Hepsut and the seat of necromancy was removed from the Coven’s ranks.
