Xew's Journal
I have already overstayed my welcome with the local exiles. They are a small-minded bunch and have no thoughts beyond mere survival. I am destined for a greater fate than this.
The Khans attacked Xinjiang again today. They appear to be following some manner of local custom. The locals seem to fear their leader. When he sees my talents, he will surely welcome me into his followers.
The Khans are experiencing some turmoil themselves, it seems. No matter. I have taken to studying the local flora and fauna. There are some very peculiar plants growing in these ruins.
I have found an extremely dangerous plant-life not far from Carnassa's pathetic camp. The locals seemed to pay me no heed as I gathered it. It was almost as though they couldn't see me, though perhaps apathy has simply gripped them too tightly. Regardless, tonight I start my work.
I have dubbed this plant "Apex", as I have yet to find anything prior with such potency. The plant's reaction when exposed to blood is remarkable. It could kill a man in an instant. However, it lacks stability. I will inquire with the Khan tomorrow.
The Khan aims to kill me. Perhaps his rivals will be more grateful?
I have taken up residence in the local wellness center. It's likely best to keep my work to myself, for now. I can ply my more helpful skills for the time being. There seems to be no shortage of test subjects in this city.
One of them survived. Surely this is it.
Despite my employ of those skilled in torture, it seems my newfound malady can still be cleansed by magical means. A fair comeuppance for the aid of the demonic, I suppose. I'll have to fortify it somehow. For now, however, my work here is at its end.
The other end of the portal is safer than I expected, but it seems to be near nothing significant. I'll have to survive here for a time, until I can find a way back to the civilized.
There is another here with me, though I have yet to lay eyes on them. I can hear them from time to time. They seem harmless enough.
I met a gold dragon today. I would dare not turn aside such good fortune. They extended an offer of aid to me; perhaps such naivety is just what I need to finish my work. What better test subject than a dragon?
