Imperial Roadside Tavern

The Teikoku no kage no shū (central Imperial Province) is responsible for building, maintaining and security of the Imperial highways. To help with that Imperial Roadside Taverns have been built every 20 miles along the Imperial highway and at every point highways cross each other.
Each Tavern is built in the same way.
A strong stone wall surrounds the compound with 1 double gate for Wagons to enter facing the highway and 1 to 2 single-person gates on other sides, depending on needs.
There is a large open area for waggons to be parked in safety and stables building.
The main Taven building is 2- to 3-story, depending on how busy the Highway is.
The ground floor is set up as a restaurant, kitchen, and raised open sleeping platforms.
The other floors are set up as rooms of different sizes and prices.
There are usually up to 10 militia soldiers from the local area and 2 retired army officers or Imperial officers depending on the importance of the location. They must ensure the safety of that section of the highway and Tavern. The soldiers are paid for by the state. If the Taven is also in a town, there will be a separate section of Imperial troops responsible for the towns securaty.
Each Taven is usually run by an extended family with one of them (each generation) trained as an Empire bureaucrat to ensure that the paperwork is correct. They are also responsible for paying for roadwork for their section of the road, which they can claim back from the government.
