Marakata

Marakata is a dragonborn town built on a crystal mountain in the Glass Groves. Dragonborn are warriors, culturally, particularly within nomadic dragonborn tribes, but on becoming sedentary there blossomed a newfound appreciation for science and knowledge within the people. The settlers on the crystal mountain studied the peculiar crystals and learned their secrets; nowadays in Marakata, being an eminent crystal scholar is as acclaimed as the warriors of old. These two facets of new dragonborn culture, fighting and science, meshed well with the people's great appreciation of beauty, and one can find in Marakata many wonders made from assembled crystals held together with ornately carved wood, devices that capture and bend beams of light. Some of these devices are made to heat, cut, or disintegrate, tales say others can illuminate, project moving images onto surfaces, or even conjure illusory figures out of thin air. The wayward bandits who see the town would only see the former type of device however, and more often than not the business end of it.

Demographics

The vast majority of inhabitants in Marakata are dragonborn. Other species remain outsiders no matter how long they live in the town.

Government

Marakata is a kingdom, the king of Marakata, a title which is not gender-specific, is always the oldest child of the previous king, or whomever the king designates as their successor (although this is extremely rare).

History

Over the course of hundreds of years, a massive clear crystal grew out of the ground, lifting an enormous amount of soil with it. Over the years, with the strong winds of the Glass Grove, sediment built up around the crystal; today what remains is a mountain covered with long sharp crystal growths. The first settlers of Marataka succeeded in scaling the dangerous crystals and began clearing the top-most part of the mountain. Today, the city of Marataka is a heavily guarded outpost; the remaining exposed crystals encircle the settlement, acting as very effective palissades, being nigh-indestructible to most of the roaming hostile creatures of Iza.

Architecture

Most buildings in Iza are stone and mortar with wooden supports, smaller abodes are entirely made of wood. All buildings are covered with ornate carvings, traditional, flowing designs that tell the stories of the family who built it.
