Session 19: Mirror, Mirror
Brussendar 11. Catha is waxing crescent.
General Summary
The Crusty Centaurs, an adventuring troupe and this year's champions of Jigow's Festival of Merit, are answering the call of a mysterious figure named Alyxian, who has urged them to bring his artifact, the Jewel of Three Prayers, to a shrine dedicated to Avandra, the Changebringer, deep within a temple to the Betrayer Gods. Our heroes have travelled to the nearby fortress-town of Baxxozan, assisted in its defense against an incursion of abominations, become entangled in the complex relationships and rivalries of a trio of visiting scholars, formed a pact with one of them to eventually explore deeper into Betrayers' Rise, and, lastly, set out on a venture to stop the activities of a Children of Malice cult that has been operating out of a fragment of the Rise known as The Queen's Cage.
Pushing past an already-deactivated angelic barrier, the team noisily approached an iron bridge across a dark chasm, triggering a flurry of cacophonous whispers from the dark that caused fits of fleeting insanity. These mind bending whispers caused Ulfgar to fling himself off the bridge, whereupon a roper revealed itself from amongst the overhead stalactites and a strange battle erupted. Plundertooth, deciding that obnoxious noise was the order of the day, was also driven to temporary madness and leapt off the bridge, whilst Clothilde was grasped by the creature and nearly eaten alive! Our two bridge-jumping companions found themselves below on a floor of twisting, quivering flesh but took this horror as a ripe opportunity to inflict maximum damage. Emeric landed some kung-fu moves on the stone hide of the roper and eventually, the terrors of the cavern were laid to rest.
Progressing then through a hall of mirrors, besting a musical lock via intuition, discovering an angelic statue that was missing one of its implements, returning to the hall of mirrors, confronting undead versions of themselves on the other side of the mirrors, retrieving the celestial weapon, and using it to dismantle a final crystalline barrier...they found themselves - at last - face-to-face with the machinations of the Children of Malice.
Atop an elevated platform overlooking a sarcophagus that was wrapped in a pair of golden chains, a hobgoblin in arcanist's robes busily made the final preparations for some sort of ritual. Taking advantage of his distraction, Emeric and Plundertooth stealthily made their way across the chamber and began to climb up to him along a series of small alcoves in the walls. But the sorcerer, known as Kolgar, was not alone! Someone positioned higher up the walls eventually spotted the interlopers and let out a warning signal to Kolgar. Engaging the pair in a brief exchange of words in which he congratulated them on having made it this far and welcomed them to "the show," he began to read from a scroll in Abyssal, whilst crossbow bolts began to rained down from above and one of the chains around the sarcophagus began to glow with pulsing, black energy.
