Session 18: Beyond the Eyes of Angels

Brussendar 11. Catha is waxing crescent.

General Summary

The Lusty Centaurs are on a quest to investigate an ancient fane of evil power known as The Queen's Cage, in hopes of disrupting the activities of a Children of Malice cult operating there and thus earn the trust of Verin Thelyss, Taskhand of Bazzoxan.   Leaping into the fray, Plundertooth and Clothilde joined a running battle across webs and atop stalagmites, and, combined with the efforts of their teammates, managed to rescue Ulfgar and Emeric from certain death at the hands of a phase spider and her monstrous underlings.   Pressing deeper in the cave system under the Penumbra Range, our heroes happened upon a very unnatural network of polished stone hallways, one so long it was more like an underground road than an archetypical "hallway." Travelling for miles in this silent, darkened space full of stale air, they came across a black obelisk marking a side passage, which was engraved with the following ominous stanza written in Abyssal:
Hear every scream,
Cross every bridge,
Become every nightmare;
Your end is inevitable.
  Proceeding down this side passage, they stumbled upon on odd scene: a crescent-shaped chamber made of smooth white marble, its surface interrupted only by golden harp-shaped double-doors on the far side. A chain dangled from the ceiling, with a sconce at its terminus containing a brilliant topaz. The floor was covered with about a foot of ash, from which protruded various bits of metal and angelic bones. Lastly, seated in front of the doorway was a semi-circular arrangement of five alabaster statues of kneeling angels, their mouths open as if in a mixture of jubilation and terror, and their eyes crying tears made of what appeared to be fresh blood. Ulfgar engaged in a clever maneuver to pull the chain without having to touch it directly, though this seemed not to produce any result. Ursa noticed that when approached, the statues seemed to periodically vibrate. And Gorem, losing patience for what this may all mean, tried the doors...to find that they opened freely, revealing a short rocky shelf projecting into inky darkness beyond.
