Session 17: Entanglements

General Summary
The Rusty Centaurs are on a quest given to them by the mysterious figure known as Alyxian, to bring his relic, the Jewel of Three Prayers, to the "Heart of Avandra," deep in Betrayer's Rise. They have agreed to act as armed escorts for an elven woman, Aloysia Telfan, on her own mission within the temple of evil. First, however, they are seeking the blessing of the guardian of the main entrance to the Rise, Taskhand Verin Thelyss, who rules over the local fortress-town of Bazzoxan. To that end, our heroes have taken on a task for him: make their way to The Queen's Cage, an ancillary region of the Betrayers' Rise, and put an end to the activities of a Children of Malice cult that has been operating there.
While one half of the party wrapped up discussions with Aloysia, the other brought along Prolix Yusaf, having hired him for translation services.
Gorem and Clothilde made a call on Caduceus Clay, a Cleric of the Wildmother who is in the process of trying to see what plant life he can coax from an old, ruined shrine to the Changebringer. He let them know that progress in restoring his home at the Blooming Grove was so good that his goddess had sent him out in the world for this new task. He gave Gorem a fragment of some of the strange, pink crystal that helps keep the Grove safe.
Once assembled, the troupe made their way through the Barbed Fields and into the foothills of the Penumbra Range without incident, as Ulfgar kept a keen watch for danger, whilst Clothilde mercilessly mocked the academic credentials of Prolix. Arriving at what appeared to be the secret entrance to The Queen's Cage, they found it indeed marked with a symbol of the Children of Malice. Next to the hidden doorway was engraved a symbol of a curved dagger dripping with poison, and underneath of it, written in celestial, the following message:
Proceeding beyond the doorway, the Busty Centaurs found a vast, pitch-dark cavern dominated by the presence of large, flat-topped stalagmites. Seeing a way to climb up to them, Ulfgar approached a natural stone formation. What he did not see, however, were crisscrossing webs between the stalagmites, upon which were hidden a number of ettercaps - brutish bipedal monsters with two-clawed hands and strange spider-like mouths. In moments, an ambush was sprung and all hell broke loose. The ettercaps, apparently working in concert with a giant phase spider, made good use of their entrapping webbing and quickly overcame Emeric, who was then poisoned into unconsciousness and carried off by the spider. Meanwhile, Ulfgar was also quickly surrounded and trapped. Despite his use of defensive magic and healing potions, and the best efforts of his allies, he finds himself in equally dire straits as our tale resumes...
