Ren Inazuma

(a.k.a. The Raiju of Shibuya Crossing)

Personality

A chance encounter with Ren could most aptly be compared to having your pleasant day being interrupted with a sudden direct hit by a bolt of lightning. One moment you’re living life as you always would, then with a blink of an eye you’ve just received a complete and utter system shock. She is an unapologetic force of nature that marches to the beat of her own drum; chaos and havoc often being left in her wake. Whether or not that chaos happens to be detrimental or somewhat beneficial to others, well… That all just depends on the situation.   Ren respects no authority other than her own, and there’s very few things that she loves more than having a good time. While there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of innocent hedonism, this girl’s idea of “fun” would easily cross the lines of what many would consider to be acceptable, and are also unfortunately very often completely illegal. Stealing a police uniform and motorcycle, then going for a joy ride around town “on patrol” while pretending to be an officer? Sure. Hijacking a mall’s intercom system and blasting her latest EP for all of the shoppers to hear? Hell yeah. Using the entire city as her own personal skate park? Yeah yeah yeah, you get the point!   Luckily these wanton acts of discord never quite match up to her love and passion for dancing and making music… Most of the time.   While one could easily come to the conclusion that Ren was only ever a carefree problem starter from seeing all of this, they would really only have a fraction of the truth to work with. There is a wholly separate aspect to the girl that usually only tends to reveal itself during those late nights spent awake in pursuit of her personal goals. A manipulative, cutthroat, and sometimes even sadistic individual who will let nothing stand in her way; whether that be a criminal or a hero.

Evo Abilities

Transporter

Rank: 3
Powers: Personal Time Manipulation Time Slow-Freeze
Examples of Type 1 Actions
Basic: Ren is able to alter her own position in the timeline by rewinding, fast forwarding, or potentially even stopping herself in time. With little effort, this power can be used to rewind herself back two seconds; effectively moving her back to her old position, and undoing anything negative or beneficial that happened within those two seconds. Alternatively, she can jump forward by one second, seemingly instantaneously appearing where she would be one second in the future if she were to continue her course. This rewinding/fast forwarding has no effect on the rest of the world around her. (Time Slow-Freeze) Everything but the user slows in time down to half speed for 20 seconds; alternatively everything could be slowed down to 1/4th the speed, but the duration would be lowered to 5 seconds. While time is slowed down, Ren and anything she is currently holding/wearing can move around freely like normal. In someone else's perception, it would look like Ren was moving faster. E.g while she has time slowed to half speed, Ren starts running. Currently she is running at 12 MPH, but effectively she would be moving at 24 MPH to others.
Minor: Increases the max rewind time and fast forward time to 4 seconds and 2 seconds respectively. Time Slow-Freeze duration increases to 40 seconds (for ½ slow) or 10 seconds (for ¼ slow) respectively.
Normal: Increases the max rewind time and fast forward time to 10 seconds and 5 seconds respectively. Time Slow-Freeze duration increases to 2 minutes (for ½ slow) or 45 seconds (for ¼ slow) respectively.

Manipulator

Rank: 2
Powers: Lightning Generation / Lightning Constructor
Examples of Type 2 Actions
Basic: Small simple tools or weapons made of lightning e.g a set of three kunai knives or shuriken, a dagger, a lockpick, a hammer (The kind meant for hitting nails y’know.) All of her lightning weapons/tools dissipate almost immediately after they leave her hand (or in the case of it being a ranged weapon like a throwing knife, soon after they hit/miss their target). Summon a small and harmless animated “creature” made of lightning, such as a butterfly. While they are incapable of physically moving things, they can charge small scale electronics such as a phone; dissipating in the process.
Minor: Medium sized, potentially more complex tools or weapons made of lightning e.g a pair of lightning rollerblades, a lightning skateboard, a Kyoketsu-shoge (Basically a double sided blade attached to a rope or chain), a Jōhyō (rope dart/javelin), a Fuma Shuriken, a pair of tessen (War fans) etc.
Normal: Larger and more deadly complex tools or weapons made of lightning e.g a katana, a throwing javelin, a bow and arrow, a shield, etc. Summon a medium sized creature made of lightning such as a wolf, which can attack her foes.   Ren’s body passively generates lightning as she physically moves around. If she is unable to move, she cannot generate her lightning.   Overuse of her powers or even just too much mental/physical exertion can lead to Ren becoming what she likes to call “Frazzled.” While in her frazzled state, Ren has almost no control over her powers and is almost constantly moving at a snail’s pace; almost as if she were affected by her own time slowing. Additionally she will occasionally and uncontrollably be shunted slightly forward/backward in time (only by about a millisecond or so), giving her an almost glitchy look. Unlike her normal self with seemingly endless amounts of energy, frazzled Ren is always exhausted, lazy, disheveled, and a bit “out of it” comparable to an overly inebriated person in some aspects. Weak little zaps of lightning will also occasionally arc from her body to whatever she’s touching, giving it a buzz akin to that uncomfortable static electricity doorknob touch. In the worst and most extreme cases, her body has even “Locked up” on her, leaving her awake but unable to move without outside help. Like a ragdoll.

Personal history

Ren’s story starts with the story of her family; most specifically her grandfather Jin Inazuma. Jin was born in the 1960’s, as evos truly began to take the world by storm. Jin was the first of his family to develop evo powers, and his own father was more than ready to capitalize on such a trait appearing within his son. Though the father had no evo powers of his own, he was determined to make sure that Jin trained and learned to use his evo abilities to their full potential; for he would become one of Japan’s greatest heroes.   Jin Inazuma did exactly that and more. Raising the Inazuma name to previously unseen heights, the new heir to the family saw to it that he and his kin rose to prominence. After the personal success of his son, Jin’s father devised another plan to ensure that the legacy of his family remained forever; arranging his son’s marriage with another evo in the hopes of creating a true legacy… A family of heroes.   While neither his first or second child managed to exhibit any evo abilities, Jin’s third child; the man who would one day become Ren’s father, did. Much like his father before him, the new young evo child was raised to be a “hero” and to continue the family legacy; eventually having an arranged marriage with another evo. The family continued to prosper and two more children were born, Rin and Ren Inazuma. The older sibling, Rin did not display any noticeable evo abilities; it was thought that he was simply born without them. Ren was a completely different story, her own powers manifesting at what some would consider an unusually young age.   While Ren’s childhood could hardly be considered normal; being raised since the moment she could walk with the idea that she was meant to become a hero; it was decent enough as far as childhood’s go. There were a lot of expectations placed on young Ren, the kid was meant to be the best of the best and that’s exactly what everyone in the family expected from her… And there was no way she was going to buckle under that pressure. Even from a young age the hero-to-be loved the idea of challenging herself, and rising above the expectations of those around her. She readily faced each and every trial and overcame them with moxie to spare. The studying, the training, none of it was ever “too much” for her. Where her brother had naturally failed, she would succeed.   That is, until the age of nine when her life was completely derailed. It had begun as a day like any other. Young Ren was on her way to meet with her morning tutor, when all of a sudden the family mansion was under attack. It all happened much too fast for the kid; one moment she was stumbling through the halls, and the very next moment she saw her parents defeated on the ground. She attempted to run forward to help but was pulled aside into a hiding spot by her brother, her mouth covered to keep her quiet. Young Ren’s attempt to break out of her older brother’s grip weren’t quite fast enough, for the next moment her eyes returned to the scene of the battle, she witnessed the assailant’s next move. A single streak of red lightning… Her parents had been executed.   Grandfather Jin arrived on the scene and engaged the villain, while the two children were left back in shock. Though they were not apprehended, the mystery assailant was forced to retreat. That day changed Ren’s view of things forever. The young girl had always thought her superhero parents to be invincible; that they would be with her forever to help on her own journey. There was little time to mourn for the child though, for her life was now under new management.   Ren and her older brother Rin would now be raised by their grandfather instead, who was much less supportive of his grandchildren. Jin Inazuma was strict, cold, harsh, and an individual who upheld very traditional views. Only a day after her parents’ death, Ren was expected to once again continue with her studying and training. While she readily faced them once, it was a whole different story now. The fervor that she once had to improve almost seemed completely gone, and the previously outgoing and excitable kid had turned quiet and distant; seemingly lost in her own little world.   For a time her older brother stood up for Ren, challenging her grandfather’s way of raising them in an attempt to defend his little sister. Soon even he was gone though, for he left the family home the moment he was old enough to support himself. All that was left in Ren’s life was an unforgiving grandfather who expected the world, an army of faceless tutors, and a cold void that her parents and brother used to fill.   Ren was sad and lonely for a good while, though eventually something new sparked in her soul. She grew to hate her grandfather and the hell that he put her through in the pursuit of his perfect hero. Not just that, but she hated her parents for being too weak to defend themselves. She hated her brother for being a coward and running away, leaving her alone. Though she despised the man, Jin Inazuma was right. Only the powerful could take what they wanted from this world. People like him, and like the person who murdered her parents. The young girl decided that she wouldn’t be like her parents or her brother, and that she would never let anyone put her through an experience like that fateful night in the mansion ever again. She would never be lonely, or powerless, or afraid for her life; the little girl who experienced such things had died on that day.   With newfound determination Ren once again faced her grandfather’s trials and challenges, only this time she surpassed each and every one. Martial training, studying and education; it was a challenge, but one that Ren readily tackled. She had ended more days bruised and battered than she would ever care to remember, but the pain was nothing compared to the goal she had her sights set on. Her grandfather was right, she would become world renowned… But she was going to do it her way, not his. Not only that, but the person who had killed her parents was going to pay; no one would be allowed to challenge her in such a way and come out of it alive. Of that she would make sure.   At the age of thirteen, Ren began her first foray into the world of vigilante justice. Not only did she want to try and uncover information about the criminal who had attacked her home; this would also serve as a good opportunity to test her skills in a real high stakes environment. As it would turn out, her first attempt at taking on one of the local gangs was interrupted by another vigilante, an anti-hero of questionable sanity who went by the name of “The Oni of the Red Light District”.   Though the nature of their first encounter was a strange and long story (that is probably too long to be covered here and deserves a flashback of its own), eventually Ren and Oni came into a partnership of sorts, with the older vigilante serving as somewhat of a mentor. During the day she would endure her grandfather’s rigorous martial and mental training, whilst during the night she would join Oni on his gang crime fighting sprees. Not only that, but the older vigilante also showed the kid how to relax and have some fun; something that had definitely disappeared from her life. He would serve as Ren’s introduction into the underground world of street dancing, hip hop music, and graffiti art. Eventually he even helped her choose her very own vigilante name; the Raiju of Shibuya Crossing. (Aptly named so after she somehow managed to leave her own iconic graffiti signature in the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing, for all of Japan to see.)   Life continued on like this pretty much up until the present day. After all these years of attempting to find the criminal who had changed her life, Ren had finally started to feel like she was getting close… Only to discover that supposedly they had moved their operations to America. Not just that, but through a few of her underground channels she’d discovered that there’d been word of “Red Lightning” appearing in a place known as New Victoria. Though she wasn’t the kind to get her hopes up, surely such a lead had to be investigated personally. Eventually she managed to convince Grandpa Jin that their training would only get her so far, and that it was time for some real world experience far from home. Whilst he didn’t seem to buy into the idea entirely, Jin Inazuma finally decided to have her enrolled at one of the colleges in New Victoria. It would serve as a temporary cover whilst she fulfilled her first mission as a hero; apprehending the villain who had left a stain upon the Inazuma family name.   And so the Raiju of Shibuya Crossing left to take New Victoria by storm…
