Hide Yo Kids

Summer 2021, Week 3

Saturday midday

Saint Marsh Orphanage, The Wards

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

Aloy had been walking through the storm that was beginning to happen outside, he hadn't checked the weather reports, and if he knew that it'd be this bad, he wouldn't have caught a train and limped to saint marshes. He went up to the door and opened it, walking in and drying himself off with some soft flicking. "Tobias? Kids? Sorry I’m late. I had a meeting with someone that was important but I'm here now!" He said with a warm tone and smile stretching out his body and sighing a bit.

The kids and other volunteers seemed more excited to have another familiar face, but something seemed off. Tobias was nowhere to be seen, and instead of the usual lunch of most Saturdays everyone seemed to be wrapping up a lunch of ham and cheese sandwiches with Doritos. "No need to apologize, Aloy! Happy to have you!" Becky, one of the volunteers and a 30-something year old woman, answered. "We heard you weren't feeling well, so we thought you might be out today, anyway." She starts getting coloring supplies for the young ones that are able to stay up through nap time and tries her best to shepherd the kids that were to nap over to their rooms. "So, what's up? Where've you beeeeeeen?" A few of the kids quizzed Aloy, some still with Dorito dust on their faces and fingers.

Aloy instantly noticed but acted nice and calmly with a warm smile again walking over to join them. "O--oh no. Who t--told you that? I-I was f--feeling a bit queasy T--Thursday night I think it was but I'm fine now." He looked down to the kids and helped shepherd the children to their rooms while they quizzed him. He looked fine, a bit pale and limping just a small amount but fine. "I was at the uni meeting a friend to talk about what I am gonna do when I graduate and I'm not sure."   Well, if I graduate. I'm not really the best student. Aloy finished and got Becky on her own for a second. She hadn't seen him yet so the height and build of the man was an impressive growth spurt. "Hey where's Tobias?"

Storyteller

Becky's expression grows sadder as she explains, "He's apparently been in the basement ever since this time yesterday, leaving instructions for us. I tried approaching him, but..." She winces. "He yelled at me to leave him be. He's never yelled about anything since I've known him, even if the kids are acting like brats."

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

"Hey, Becky you ain't gotta talk about it. I'll h-help you uh out up here and t--then let me try. Bet Sorin went blabbering on." Aloy sighed a bit and started helping her with whatever she was doing giving her a weak smile his face still bruised and with some Band-Aids on the cuts from crashing into the park a few nights before. "I'm sure he's fine. Probably just diving too far. Just gotta go nice and slow. It takes me a lot t--to give up o--on something p--physically."

After helping out Becky set the kids down for their nap, and the rest were occupied under Becky's supervision, Aloy would make his way to the door that would lead to the basement stairwell. Becky gives him a nod the acknowledgment of 'you got this', he opens the first door and heads down to the door at the bottom of the stairwell, the one that would lead to Tobias' room in the basement.

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

Aloy as his usual fearless self except when he got shot at headed in and stretched out looking around for Tobias. "Tobias man. What's goin' on? Something big happening." Aloy's tone was softly spoken and confident though it showed some caution.

Saint Marsh

A slow series of shuffling steps approach the door, Tobias breathing a bit more heavily than normal. His eyes, normally bright and full of life, were now bleary and tired from the night's and morning's lamentations, his movements slow with grief from what he saw as he approaches the door. "Lad... ye should be home right now, restin' up an' weatherin' out th' storm." His voice, hoarse and full of pain behind it, issues from behind the door. "I gotta figure out what I'm ta do with th' kids ta get them somewhere safer."

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

Aloys look weakened a bit with sympathy as he crossed his arms and softly pressed down the door handle softly pushing forward to open. "I--I...oh god Tobias h--have you not been eating you sound horrid. Please let me in? Why do we need to get the kids outta here?" Aloy's tone gained worry very quickly, but he held his head high trying to stay calm and fine.

Tobias opens the door slowly, revealing the living space that may have looked nice once, but was recently trashed. A coffee table tipped over in rage lay on the concrete floor, nice furniture such as a couple of armchairs, nightstands and lamps lay strewn about. Upon seeing Tobias himself, he looks absolutely horrible. Dark circles surround his reddened eyes, a few bruises lay upon his arms, even his clothing looked ragged.   He sighs heavily. "There's gonna be a bad string o' events a-comin' in Henry. Police hostages, shootouts, an' evos fightin' evos. That... is just one a ma worries these last few days. Another big'un was hearin' about you. I did ma best ta try an' keep the youngin's outta th' loop, sayin' ye were sick an' all. Then I jus' started lookin' as I do, on both ya an' Sorin..." Tearing up again, he continues with his voice cracking up a bit, "He's in trouble, lad... He an' Layla both, last I saw."

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

Aloy looked over to Tobias and gave a sigh softly patting the man’s shoulder and listening to the report over the news. He pulled out his keys and handed them to the older man. "Uh Layla? I don't know who she is but You gotta just take a second and breathe Tobias, take a deep breath and call Sorin, ask him for a hand we can take the kids to mine if need be....or I can get him just tell me where he is, and I'll go check on him easy."

Saint Marsh

Taking in a shaky breath, he responds softly, "I never told ya 'about those two, have I? Those two were th' only ones I never found homes fer." He smiles slightly before he continues. "Sorin was always headstrong about protectin' th' family, and th' bugger made it his mission ta come back after ev'ry interview. Layla was little different in that regard, an' th' two were ev'ry bit brother an' sister as could be."   His expression returns to a frown. "I tried callin' them, but they never answered. I saw 'em both get jumped near a stadium or a stage when I looked. I looked further an' further an' things start ta get hazy... but..." His voice begins to shake again. "A possibility came up he could die at th' hands of someone that enjoyed his pain... way too much..."   His frown deepens even more. "An' th' kids, volunteers an' I already have most of everything packed an' ready ta move. I jus' got caught up in all of it, an' th' Lord knows I'm tough as nails when I need ta be, but this... this'll be a big test o' faith fer th' city. An’... I don't know how we can move back if th' place is ruined..."

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

"Not really, I just know Sorin is usually around, and I don't know who Layla is..." Aloy quickly swung his phone into his hand and gave Tobias a strong hug and instantly pulled up the find my friends app. "He's gonna be alright. Look, I'm gonna find him. We need to get the cops on this but fuck. Look what's his number and I'll try and find him but let’s get the kids out now, and I'll try my best to not let them destroy this place, okay?"   Aloy was going to join that fight. Nothing was going to stop him once he got the children and everyone else out of the area, "Look we'll figure it out when we get there alright?"

Saint Marsh

A bit shocked to receive any physical contact from Aloy regarding his usual distaste for it, let alone a full-on hug, he returns the heartfelt gesture and replies, "Thank ye, son. Yer truly a guardian angel fer all of us." Once the hug ends, he looks with newfound determination towards Aloy and smiles once more, life seeming to have returned to him again as he gives both of Sorin's every day and emergency phone numbers.   "I know ya ain't much o' th' prayin' or God-fearin' type, but... Bless yer heart, son. Ye've already done so much. An' if ye've gotta get involved in th' mess in Henry... be careful, aye?"

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

Aloy felt weird about the hug. He admittedly didn't like it but felt Tobias needed it to breathe and just clear his mind. He quickly jotted down the numbers. He'll have to check the app after this fight, and he pulled out his credit card and wrote down the pin handing it to the older man. "If they stay at mine you might need to grab more air mattresses, just leave the car alone and there's a few space air mattresses in the attic."   Aloy nodded and pulled up his hood. "Anyway, go get them out and don't worry a wink about anything. I'll deal with it. and report Sorin and Layla missing to the cops."

Saint Marsh

Smiling a bit, he politely refuses the card. "It's because of Sorin's generous donations we have a bit set aside fer times like this. But... it's appreciated that we have somewhere asides a hotel ta go to."

Storyteller

They soon rounded up the kids, hiring a shuttle to take them to a temporary home at Aloy's home while Becky ran to procure some supplies like air mattresses and extra food. They were met with some tears from the kids, especially some of the older ones that have grown a little attached to the place, and even Alec seemed to want to be supportive and help out the younger kids move. Soon enough, they were all safe, away from the Wards and the storm brewing in it.
