Down with the Old Road Sickness

Summer 2021, Week 3

Monday early evening

Priory Park, Downtown

Storyteller

A young man sits on the edge of the roof, atop the highest building in New Victoria. Nearly all of the city can be seen from here. The thrill of the hunt. The promise of payment. These things and more lingered on the young man’s mind as he gazed out at the scene before him. He focuses in on Main Street and suddenly he feels a hand placed onto his shoulder momentarily, his vision quickly improving shortly after.

"I wasn't sure you'd actually show up this time. You seemed pretty upset..." he says without looking away, now taking in the much greater detail. Weeks of practice made it easy to adjust to the added clarity, but part of him could never get used to the stark difference. His vision was normally poor even by average standards, and yet this borrowed power made him able to see more clearly than many humans could ever hope to with the naked eye.

Conspiratus

"There is a sickness in the ancient, pitted cobbles of The Old Road, and on its writhing path you will face viciousness, violence, and perhaps other damnably transcendent terrors. But great adversity has a beauty - it is the fire that tempers the blade." The voice comes from behind the young man, a distorted and modified voice from a relatively advanced voice changer belonging to a cloaked and masked figure.

Storyteller

Couldn't have said it better myself.   "I understand that, and I'm ready to face that adversity. You've helped me so much this past month, and I agree that things need to change... I want to help you, no matter the cost." he says as his vision returns to normal and he finally gets up and turns around to face the cloaked figure properly.

Conspiratus

"Patience, young one. Haste makes waste. Continue doing what I've asked of you and perhaps we can discuss more in the future." They place their hand on his shoulder once more, and a bright glow appears that lasts for several seconds before fading. They let out a distorted sigh as the impact of the effort hits them all at once, hunching over slightly before recomposing themselves.

"Get going, you have 24 hours this time, but try not to waste it." The young man wastes no time in heading for the stairwell, leaving the mysterious figure alone on the roof. Can I really trust this kid? What the hell am I doing...
