Manhunter Beetles
"You hear that buzzing? You're already dead." - Maynard Greencloak
Manhunter beetles are deadly, horse-sized predators with jagged, sandpaper-like carapaces and barbed, poison-coated horns capable of paralyzing their prey within moments. Found in dense forests and magick-rich environments like the Grandgleam, they use their chameleon-like camouflage and 35 mph flight speed to ambush prey ranging from deer to unsuspecting villagers. Highly social during mating seasons, these beetles form swarms numbering in the hundreds, leaving trails of devastation across settlements they plague. Resistant to conventional weapons and thriving in hostile conditions, manhunter beetles are a persistent threat that showcases nature’s most magickal and horrifying extremes.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Manhunter beetles are immense, with bodies the size of a horse or dire wolf. Their jagged, sandpaper-like carapace, dark bush-green in color, serves as both camouflage and a formidable defense. This exoskeleton is an inch thick, making it resistant to most blades and projectiles, and painful to strike even with heavy weaponry. The most lethal aspect of their anatomy is their barbed, serrated horns, coated in a thin layer of potent paralytic poison. This toxin can immobilize prey within moments of contact, leaving it vulnerable to the beetle’s razor-sharp mandibles, which can shear through flesh and bone with ease. The poison is produced by specialized glands at the base of the horns, constantly replenishing their deadly coating. Their wings, though delicate in appearance, are capable of carrying their substantial mass at speeds of up to 35 mph. Combined with a sort of natural camouflage allowing them to change colors/patterns to mimic their environment, these features make them highly efficient predators and nearly impossible to anticipate in their natural habitat.
Genetics and Reproduction
These beetles reproduce sexually, with females laying up to 100 eggs in nutrient-rich environments. The larvae, voracious feeders, rapidly consume organic material before maturing into pupae. Their reproductive dominance is a key factor in their ecological spread, with swarms numbering in the hundreds during mating seasons.
Growth Rate & Stages
Egg: 2-3 weeks to hatch.
Larva: 6-8 weeks, consuming organic matter incessantly.
Pupa: 4-6 weeks, transforming into adults.

Adult: Fully mature within three months, with a lifespan of 3-5 years.
Ecology and Habitats
Manhunter beetles are predominantly found in dense forests, particularly magick-infused regions like the Grandgleam Forest. They also thrive in marshes, mountains, and foothills. These beetles are ambush predators, using both camouflage and coordinated hunting tactics to dominate their territories.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Carnivorous by nature, manhunter beetles prey on large animals and humans. They use their paralytic-coated horns to immobilize prey before shredding it with their mandibles. Their appetite for flesh is immense, but they can sustain themselves for weeks after a substantial meal. During swarm events, they can decimate entire herds—or villages—leaving nothing behind.
Biological Cycle
These creatures are most active during spring and autumn, when they swarm for mating. They hibernate during colder months, burrowing deep into the earth. During mating seasons, their numbers and aggression spike dramatically, often devastating local ecosystems and villages.
Behaviour
Solitary outside of mating seasons, manhunter beetles are fiercely territorial. They become highly social and cooperative when swarming, hunting with terrifying precision. Aggressive and calculating, they use ambush tactics to overwhelm prey, often targeting the weakest or most isolated individuals.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Manhunter beetles possess compound eyes capable of detecting the faintest movements and are highly attuned to sound and vibrations. Their chameleon-like camouflage, which renders them nearly invisible against forest foliage, allows them to ambush prey with lethal precision.
Scientific Name
Coleopteran carnifex
Origin/Ancestry
Manhunter beetles are monstrous offshoots of ordinary beetles, warped by exposure to ancient magickal energies during the Lost Ages. Likely originating in the Grandgleam Forest and other magick-heavy areas, evolving deadly adaptations.
Conservation Status
Far from endangered, manhunter beetles are a scourge across Everwealth’s wilds. Their ability to reproduce quickly and survive harsh environments makes them nearly impossible to eradicate. Most efforts to control their population focus on organized culls during mating seasons, though these are perilous undertakings.
