Gullsperch
"Took a painful long time to get here, 'blowin holes through those mountains for a whole generation. But lookin around at what we built, sittin' here in me ship, lookin out to sea... 'twere worth every broken bone." -Gregor Gleeson, Captain of the HMS Heinous.
Gullsperch stands as Everwealth’s newest city, a chaotic sprawl of ambition and half-finished dreams, built in a desperate bid to secure the kingdom's long-overdue second port. A city still under construction, it is a place of scaffolding, half-paved streets, and hastily erected districts struggling to support a swelling population of laborers, merchants, and hopeful settlers. Its foundation is not just stone and mortar, but the blood and toil of those who gave their years, and too often their lives, to carve it from the unforgiving cliffs and coastlines. The land itself resisted its existence; entire mountains and hills were obliterated in the campaign to make way for the city, causing deadly avalanches that buried workers by the hundreds. Those who survived now fill its streets, many left embittered and forgotten, their only reward a city that barely acknowledges their sacrifice. Yet, despite its turbulent birth, Gullsperch has already become a vital artery of trade and naval power. Situated along the southern coast, it provides Everwealth with a long-denied second foothold in global commerce, breaking the Wardsea monopoly that has long dictated the kingdom’s maritime fortunes. The city teems with Dwarfs, whose expertise in engineering and shipbuilding is indispensable, alongside a growing presence of Aquians, Avians, and other races rarely seen so prominently in Everwealth. The docks are alive with movement, the scent of brine and fresh timber mixing with the ever-present dust of ongoing construction. Its rapid expansion has left security a distant afterthought, corruption rampant among officials, and law enforcement stretched to its breaking point. What little order exists is dictated by those with the wealth or strength to enforce it, leaving the city’s future hanging precariously between prosperity and collapse.
Demographics
Gullsperch is a city of transience, its population surging with the tides of laborers, traders, and migrants seeking opportunity or escape. While predominantly Humans and Dwarfish, it has the largest Aquian population in Everwealth, drawn to its deep harbors and new economic potential. Avian and other skyborne races are also more common here than in most of the kingdom, finding work among the towering shipyards and cliffside watchtowers. The lower districts are filled with displaced laborers, many too wounded or aged to continue working, left to scrape by on meager pensions or whatever work they can find. A rising merchant class is beginning to take root, though crime syndicates and corrupt officials claim just as much influence over the city’s development.
Government
In theory, Gullsperch is ruled by an Everwealth-appointed Governor, but in practice, governance is fractured between the fledgling city council, naval officers, and powerful trade interests. The Merchant Consortium has already sunk its teeth into the city, dictating economic policy with little interference, while bribery and favoritism ensure that justice is rarely blind. With security resources spread thin, much of the city’s law enforcement falls to private mercenary companies hired by the wealthiest factions.
Defences
Despite its coastal position, Gullsperch lacks the naval fortifications of Wardsea, leaving it vulnerable to both seaborne and land-based threats. Temporary wooden palisades serve as makeshift city walls, while the docks rely on warships to serve as their primary defense. Watchtowers dot the cliffs, manned by an overworked and underpaid city guard, many of whom look the other way in exchange for a coin purse. Plans exist to reinforce the city with proper fortifications, but delays and mismanagement leave Gullsperch in a precarious state of readiness.
Industry & Trade
As a port city, Gullsperch’s lifeblood is maritime trade. It serves as a hub for seafood, shipbuilding, and exotic imports previously funneled exclusively through Wardsea. The city's nascent economy is built upon its vast timber industry, harvesting the surrounding forests to supply its docks and expanding infrastructure. Fishmongers, blacksmiths, and alchemists catering to seafarers thrive here, but the real wealth belongs to the shipping companies and merchant lords investing in its future. However, with rapid development comes exploitation, indentured labor, smuggling rings, and predatory contracts are commonplace, ensuring that only the shrewdest survive.
Infrastructure
Gullsperch is a city of unfinished projects. The main roads are half-paved, aqueducts barely supply enough water, and many homes are little more than glorified work camps. The docks, however, are rapidly expanding, boasting massive shipyards capable of producing war galleys and merchant vessels at an astonishing rate. Temporary housing still dominates much of the city, with entire districts waiting to be properly planned or reconstructed after hasty, unstable builds were deemed unsafe.
Districts
The Docks are the heart of Gullsperch, a sprawling network of piers, shipyards, and warehouses where laborers, merchants, and smugglers rub shoulders. The Cliffside Wards house the city's wealthiest residents, offering a rare sense of stability and security. The Timber Quarter is a chaotic sprawl of mills, carpentry shops, and labor camps that provide the backbone of Gullsperch’s shipbuilding industry. The Mudtown Slums are where displaced workers and failed prospectors settle, living in shoddy homes with little hope for improvement.
Assets
Gullsperch’s greatest asset is its strategic location, finally granting Everwealth a second major port. Its shipyards, though still expanding, are among the largest in the kingdom, and its timber reserves ensure that construction remains relentless. Its deep harbors accommodate larger vessels than Wardsea, promising future naval dominance, if its governance can stabilize.
Guilds and Factions
The Merchant Consortium holds immense sway over the city’s economic policies, ensuring that trade remains in their hands. The Gullsperch Dockworkers’ Union fights for better conditions, though its influence is limited against wealthier interests. The Black Gull Syndicate, a growing smuggling and extortion network, thrives in the city's lax law enforcement, moving illicit goods with ease.
History
Gullsperch was born out of necessity, a desperate attempt to break Wardsea’s stranglehold on Everwealth’s maritime trade. Twenty years ago, the grueling campaign to demolish the coastline began, leveling mountains and redirecting rivers to carve out the foundations of the city. What followed was two decades of hardship, frequent avalanches, collapsing tunnels, and a ruthless disregard for worker safety. Though thousands toiled to make it a reality, few were rewarded. Many of the original laborers, crippled or embittered, now linger in the city’s slums, watching the wealth flow past them. Though still incomplete, Gullsperch stands as a testament to ambition and sacrifice, and whether it thrives or crumbles will depend on who truly controls its future.
Points of interest
The Titan’s Wharf is the largest dockyard in Everwealth, a marvel of engineering where war galleys and merchant ships alike are constructed. The Sunken Graves, a mass graveyard for the countless laborers lost to the city’s construction, serves as both a memorial and a grim reminder of its cost. The Sinking Ward, an entire district built too hastily upon unstable ground, is slowly collapsing into the sea.
Tourism
Though not a tourist city in the traditional sense, Gullsperch draws sailors, merchants, and adventurers seeking fortune. Taverns and gambling dens thrive, catering to the transient population, while those drawn by the city’s rougher charms can find brawling pits and underground markets.
Architecture
Gullsperch is a city of extremes, its docks and upper districts boast sturdy Dwarfish craftsmanship, while the lower districts are filled with unstable wooden structures thrown together in a rush. The coastal cliffs have been carved into, creating artificial terraces where homes and businesses cling precariously to the rock face.
Geography
Perched along Everwealth’s southern coast, Gullsperch is nestled between towering cliffs and the endless sea. The land is scarred by its rapid development, with the remnants of demolished hills and redirected waterways still visible in its outskirts.
Climate
The city experiences strong coastal winds, frequent storms, and heavy fog rolling in from the sea. Summers are warm and humid, while winters bring frigid ocean gales that make life miserable for those without proper shelter.
Natural Resources
Gullsperch thrives on its timber industry, harvesting the vast forests inland to fuel its construction. Its waters are rich in fish, supporting a growing seafood trade, while deep-sea mining operations have begun exploring the potential of rare minerals beneath the waves. However, deforestation and soil erosion remain growing concerns, threatening long-term sustainability.
