Everden

Scope

The motivation behind building Everden

I am building this world, and D&D campaign, because I love storytelling, the game, and getting sucked into another world.

The goal of the project

I am hoping to get out of this an incredible adventure that is part pre-written by Hit Point Press and part unique-to-me improv. I want to gain greater trust in myself as a creator.

Everden's Unique Selling point

Of course, the world of Everden and D&D is quite enthralling, but I want to bring my ideas of a war between the four elements to life. This can be a staging ground for the book I want to write.

Theme

Genre

Fantasy -- magic is common amongst all people, but to truly master it is an artistic science.

Reader Experience

I hope my players feel curious about the world I'm building and expanding. I hope my players want to join me in exploring the reaches of the Wood and the rest of Everden.

Reader Tone

The tone of the world is someplace in the middle, but as the layers are peeled away, it's darker than it originally seems. The surface is glorious and thriving while the underlayers are sinister and foreboding.

Recurring Themes

  1. All things in the world are created requiring balance. Without proper balance, the very fabric of nature falls to pieces.
  1. Good and evil are not as plain as black and white.
  1. Fire. Flame. Burning. Scars. Wanton destruction leaves terrible marks.

Character Agency

I want my players to have a realistic impact on the world they inhabit. I want them to find out truths and secrets and lies and want to do something about them. I want them to effect the change they want to see.

Focus

Race relations
Wealth Distribution
Religious influence on life and death views
Balance between elements and the influence of regular life

Drama

The Scorched Grove is expanding, creating more and new fire-based monsters, and causing people to be displaced and turn to banditry to survive.
People who are both displaced due to the fires as well as furious at the Birdfolk ruling elite are joining bandit clans which have recently reformed the Bandit Coalition. They're depressed, angry, and restless.
Disturbing the natural cycle of life and death is taboo and damning.
The Scorched Grove is expanding... but why? The elemental forces that make up Everden have never been at peace, but lately they've started skirmishes against each other. Will there be open war? What does that mean for the living in Everden?
