Deathwing
In the heart of Damus, in the ancient Heart Lake area, the jungle is almost untouched. The largest bird of the continent nests here, the Beastman and the Bena elves place special importance to this creature.
The Deathwing is a huge bird of prey that can even take down an elephant calf or a Segai hunter if its gets too close. Its inky blue, metallic feathers look black in the shadows, its 15-20 cm claws dig deep into the prey. The hooked beak of the Deathwing is bright yellow, extremely hard and sharp. It flies fast, can cover huge distances, and maneuvers well for its size. The Deathwing's sense of smell is it's keenest, allowing it to track those who had disturbed the nest. The bird's vision is not so sharp, it does not attack smaller game. It primary hunts larger animals: mammals and reptiles, such as elephants, unicorns, crocodiles and giant snakes, but it also eats dusky sharks, mountain goats or spotted gazelles. Deathwing rarely attacks humanoids, preferring to fight in defense itself or the nest. It may mistake a person dressed in fur for its pray.
It builds its nest on the top of the tallest trees, on the inaccessible cliffs of the Watershed Mountains or among ancient Elven ruins. Eggs and flightless chicks face many dangers, but adults have almost no natural enemies. Although nests are difficult to access, adult birds emerge from all parts of the continent when hunting.
Spotting the dark shadow, the Bugits seek shelter or retreat into their homes. The Segai usually grab their weapon and try to reach the bird with their spears. Anyone who injures such a creature or even kill one, can challenge the Chieftain to a duel for his title. Segai chieftains and shamans like to wear Deathwing feathers, claws or skulls as ornaments on their clothing, armor and weapon. For the Bena elves, the Deathwing is a symbol of invincibility and victory. They braver scouts and hunters follow the flight of the bird for days or try to get directly to the nests, to collect the dead feathers. According to Bena elf tradition, arrows made from these never miss their target.
