The Betrayer's Blade

The Betrayer's Blade

The end of Mercy

Take the blade, boy. Run it across your arm, nice and deep. This is your first and most important scar.
Jace Piper, high lord's Shield, to a young Aric Vasey during his Anewal
The Betrayer's Blade is a highly-embellished dagger that has a great significance to the Shields. Whilst its history is dark, it has become an important artefact that serves to remind the Shields of their oaths.

Appearance

The Betrayer's Blade is a highly-embellished cross-hilt dagger, commissioned from a highly-skilled blacksmith and made out of the finest materials. It is unique and eye-catching, although it remains highly functional.   This dagger has a seven inch, symmetrical blade made out of folded steel. Both edges of the blade are kept wickedly sharp, and a shallow rounded fuller runs down its centre.   The hilt is five inches long and made from a single piece carved dragon bone, including the crossguard and the pommel. The crossguard is inlaid with fine gold filagree, whilst the pommel is carved in the shape of a dragon's head, with Seruic sapphires for eyes. To allow for better grip, the main part of the hilt is wrapped in strips of the hide of a wolf shark.

History

His blood was so damn warm on my hands. Every time I close my eyes I can feel it there, can see his smile.
— Lucas Harker, during interrogation

Originally known as Mercy, the dagger was gifted to nine-year-old Lucas Harker by his father Lord Ambrose Harker. It was a gift, intended as a good luck charm, when Lucas became a candidate to become a Shield. The extra luck worked, as Lucas was selected to be the Shield to the five-year-old Elenasia heir, Abel Elenasia.   In 4552 EA, when Abel was ten years old, something changed within his Shield. One dark night, whilst a storm raged outside, Lucas Harker entered the prince's bedroom from his adjoining chamber with Mercy clutched in his hand. He climbed up on the bed, causing Abel to stir and - as Harker recounted later - smile at him. He then stabbed the boy a total of twelve times. Later during intense questioning, Lucas Harker could not explain why he had murdered the boy.   He was executed two days later by Callan Erell, the High Lord's Shield, by beheading. The punishment was carried out with Lucas's own sword. He was fourteen years old.   From then on, Mercy was renamed the Betrayer's Blade. The Harker family has never again been invited to send a Shield candidate to Lord's Rock.

Current Usage

The Betrayer's Blade is an integral part of the Anewal, one of the ceremonies a new Shield must complete. Under the instruction of the High Lord's Shield, the young boy must cut himself with the dagger on the forearm, deep enough to scar.   This scar has two purposes: firstly, to remind them what happens to Shields who break their oath and, secondly, to promise that it will never happen again.   For the rest of the time, it remains locked in a box in the vault beneath the castle. It is considered taboo for anyone to open the box outside of the Anewal ceremony, and forbidden for anyone but a Shield to touch the dagger directly.

"This is your first and most important scar."   Oh, that is such a good quote, I really like that one. Really good stuff, Serukis! :D

When I read your article on wolf sharks, I remember wondering whether anyone would hunt them for their skin! The fact that this is a shorter article and is so focused gives it a really strong/edgy impact - I can't think of better words to explain it (sorry) - sometimes less is more and this is an excellent example of it.

Thank you so much! When I was doing researching on blades it mentioned shark skin and I was like "perfect!". And I'm glad that it had more impact because it was shorter! I definitely didn't want to overload this article with too much information.

This is very good, Emy. The way you described the murder without giving any explanation makes it more terrible and makes me feel sorry for both of these boys... Also this:" He climbed up on the bed, causing Abel to stir and - as Harker recounted later - smile at him."

I definitely feel sorry for both of them. I have several potential explanations for why it happened, and I intend to explore it in a short story at some point.   That line gets me too. </3   Thank you!

Ima go with Qurillion. That first quote is spot on and made me want to read immediately. Excellent. Ahhh and its about the shields!   Quick aside: "...important artifact that helps to reminds the Shields of their oaths." Remind, if I recall. No big deal just wanted to point it out.   Another awesome item. I love how your writing flows with lovely words like filigree. I can't remember the last time I used or heard that word. The story behind thebdagger and its ritual use is interesting and sad in many ways, considering how the relationship between prince and shield is. oof. It's dark and I love it.   The ritual reminder is also a nice touch. It's a good idea to use it for that purpose and a wonderful implementation of the idea. I won't call it a trope since I havnt seen it much in recent years. Well done once more!

Thank you so much. <3 I do love the Shields! :) Thank you for the comment on my writing style too - it means a lot.   Oops, I'll fix that typo! Thanks for pointing it out. :)

Excellent article. I agree that the first quote is very powerful. In a way it is scary that the blade is still used in a ceremony. Because if the dagger caused Lucas Harker to kill the Prince, I would think destroying it or locking it up somewhere safe might be a better option. Of course, perhaps he was sleepwalking, and the dagger had nothing to do with what happened.

Thank you! Yeah, that's part of the reason it's kept locked up most of the time, because they just don't know what caused the murder.

Oh, of course! They only take it out for the Anewal. That makes sense. I really like that tradition.

I want to know why the child killed the prince. In fact, I have got to know. The scar in remembrance is such a good idea as well, a visual promise of their duties as Sheilds.

You should check out the The 5 Shudake, if you want of course.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to go into that more in the future. It's an interesting story.
