Void Culture Organization in Etherium | World Anvil

Void Culture

A culture for people born and raised in the depths of space, or any human who spends significant time in space.   There is heavy emphasis on avoiding damaging the surrounding environment, especially in space vessels and near the outer walls of colonies. Weapons inside the vessel, if required, are always melee, and even in space colonies, projectiles are either restricted or prohibited outright. People raised in these environments often experience some culture shock when going planetside, and when they see planeters casually throwing or shooting things. Those born and raised in space vessels experience some more severe, but not always unpleasant, shock, when they first go planetside and see how open all the environments are. They're also more likely to develop agoraphobia.   There's plenty of lingo pertaining to space phenomena (like colloquial terms for solar storms, like "sunpiss" or "starfarts," but for less crass versions, there's "plasma burst" or "solturm"), as well as lingo pertaining to vessels and colony sections.

Fashion and Food

Much of the void fashion is impractical, in varying ranges of flashy and dull. It's most common in intentionally lower-gravity areas to take advantage of floaty designs. High-gravity style fashion is usually more practical and less likely to snag on every surface the wearer passes by.   Food in lower-grav settings is usually somewhat sticky or viscous in an attempt to keep meals from separating and literally drifting off the plate. Some foods, like breads and other baked goods, are often more dense and heavy to compensate for the lighter gravity, but modifications are usually made to ensure they still hold sufficient nutrition. Thick meal pastes and tightly-packed food with peel-away packaging is also common for those who find themselves frequently on the go. Hot sauce, honey, soy sauce, mustard, and other strong-flavored condiments are also very popular.   In more normal-grav settings, food is more varied and intricate, and not as much mind is paid to density, though simple meals and treats are still as common as they are on any planet. Strongly flavored condiments are still fairly popular, but not practically a staple like for those living in low-grav environments.

Waste and Corpse Management

Human waste is funneled throughout the vessel or colony to a treatment plant, where ancient time-tested methods are used to treat and recycle waste in safe, clean, and efficient means. The remnant biosolids are always used as fertilizer. Enough space is always planned out to house these facilities in advance, before any domestications are alloted.   Corpses are handled most frequently through aquamation, and if the person volunteered for it, cremated instead to create the numerous gasses that plants in the biodomes need in order to thrive. Remains are returned to families or are turned into bonemeal. Other corpses are buried in the biodome, after being partly decomposed, and used as fertlizer for all sorts of plants - including fruits and vegetables that residents consume with the knowledge of their origins.
If the corpse has cybernetic components, these are removed during corpse processing and sent to another facility whose job is to dismantle the parts and prepare them for recycling and repurposing. For cyber-organic implants, these are aquamated to get rid of the organic material, and the remaining components are then sent to the same aforementioned facility.

Demography and Population

Many millions, if not around a billion, all residing in space itself within vessels or orbiting colonies or stations.

Military

Varies dependant on locale.   Most vessels have their own version of law enforcement and security, and so do orbiting colonies and stations.   There are PMCs who often offer their services to groups who need them, and these are almost exclusively spacebound. They typically are used to bulk out native forces in protracted conflicts, but sometimes are also used in lieu of directly hired security.
