Sunshield Ring Item in Etherium | World Anvil

Sunshield Ring

These rings are not terribly common, for they are more difficult to create than one might think.   Sunshield rings are necromantic in origin, which surprises many who are unfamiliar with necromancy as a whole, for sunshield rings are universally made of high purity gold. Sometimes carved with imagery of a partially-clouded sun, but also often left plain, these rings bond to their wearer before providing their effect. The best versions include a small oval of obsidian mounted in the centre, with smaller pieces of obsidian mounted on either side of the large central one.   When an undead creature of any type wears one, the ring uses the undead's negative energy as a fuel source to shield it from the harmful effects of positive energy, granting effective immunity. While this can be used against weaponized healing spells, it is most often used to grant protection from Alluani's sun during the day, the rays of which broadcast positive energy (unlike the suns of Terra or Vruanhai - or indeed, most any other star).   A sunshield ring's protection only lasts for as long as it has a necromantic energy source - if the undead runs out of energy, the protection fails. This increases the blood needs of vampires, the soul energy needs of revenants, and otherwise further limits the amount of time an undead creature may go without some means of fueling itself. In practice, most individuals find this to be very manageable, but it can become dangerous in prolonged conflicts.   Though these rings are made of relatively fragile materials, their enchanted nature makes them almost impervious to mundane damage sources.
