Coda Amani
"You offer the comfort you yourself could never find" -Nico
Coda is a steward of the afterlife, appointed by Evidansa to guide those who are passing through to the afterlife. They are one of three phantoms who were revived to be stewards of death, along with Ranni and Ritara
Coda is played by Nicoatnight in the Origins Timeline, though they are present as an NPC in other timelines.
Appearance
Coda stands at 1.6 meters tall (~5'3"). They have a tan complexion, black wavy hair, and hazel eyes. They have a slight haze on their skin, as if their outline is fuzzy. They have a scar on their back, which is visible due to the window in their outfit at the back for their wings. Their wingspan length is about 3.8 meters long from wing to wing (~12’6”). Their feet resemble a bird from the knee down and her fingertips are a darker brown and clawed. Both are a gradient of the fourth color in the palette to the third color on the left at the bottom with the talons on their feet. They have small feathers along the sides of their face by their ears the same color as the top of their wing’s feathers. These cannot react the same way that their wings can to their emotions (puffing up when startled, shaking slightly when excited, etc.). Their eyes have slitted pupils, slight crows feet, and they have freckles located on their face and shoulders.
Personality
Coda is very cheerful and incredibly upbeat, despite being a messenger of death and the dead. They are always
Powers and Equipment
Attavliva
Attavliva is a scythe with a handle made of dying wood, and a blade made of dark impure steel. The handle is angled as if it was taken straight from a thin tree branch. The blade is covered in a small layer of smoke.
They are able to summon it by reaching out either hand to their side in a fist, and they can dispel it at will, causing it to dissolve into smoke. Attavliva can phase through certain solid objects, allowing Coda to bypass their enemy's armor and attack their body directly. It cannot pass through weapons. Attavliva is derived from Swedish, roughly meaning "to cull"
The ParasoulsCoda has a collection of parasols that have various names. The first one they received as a gift from Evidansa; it is made of the same dying wood their scythe was created from. They only use it during very specific circumstances, and this is the only parasol that is capable of being shifted into their scythe
PhantasiaCoda is able to change between having a physical form and having a spirit form. While in spirit form, they are not able to speak or interact with anything in the physical world. They cannot be seen by the living, and they will not get sunburnt. The word Phantasia is a play on the word "fantasia", which is a musical composition with free form and often an improvisatory style.
Spirit SeerCoda is able to see the souls of both the living and dead. They cannot see souls through walls. Souls manifest as the image of who the person was while living/what the person looks like. While a soul is inhabiting a body (i.e. a person who is alive), their body appears to slightly glow similar to Zena's Revealing Arrow, but it does not light up the area around them. Due to this, Coda is able to see the living in the dark, but they are not able to see them threw solid surfaces
Apocalyptic ConductorCoda has control over all undead monsters around them. Undead monsters will not attack Coda. They control them through the utterance of musical terms, and when a command is spoken there is a slight echo in Coda's voice.
FlightAs a past elytrian, Coda has wings and can fly. They can also use their wings to glide, but their flight is limited as the muscles controlling their wings weakened after their death.
Evidansa's GiftCoda is one of the few individuals with magical abilities. Coda's magic stems from death, and their magic is strongest while surrounded by undead monsters and while in the Nether. Their powers include: poisoning others, raising and controlling undead monsters, giving people simple hallucinations, and summoning their weapons at will.
Weaknesses
Thanatophobia
Many of the living are afraid of Coda due to them being a sign of death. They often have to explain to people that they do not have malicious intent. They cannot control when someone dies nor cause it, they can sense however the coming of death and therefore feel a pull to that person.
SunburnMuch like other undead monsters, Coda's skin will start burning when in contact with the sunlight. To combat this, they usually wear clothing that covers as much skin as possible
Minor ClaustrophobiaGrowing up in an environment where every building has tall or no ceilings and large spaces to accommodate wingspans, Coda has never experienced close quarters or short ceilings before.
Brittle BonesAlthough their hollow bones are required for her body to be able to take flight, Coda’s weight makes her quite weak in overall strength whilst on the ground.
Stories
“I have always meant to ask, you know. Why was I chosen?” They meant it to sound nonchalant, and wince at the knowing smile that overtakes their First’s face. Yet she is kind enough not to tease them for the tremble of desperate curiosity that could so easily be seen in their question.
“Is that so?” Evidansa’s words are soft, always so soft, difficult to hear but decisive in their cadence. Many need absolute stillness to hear her, and, to be frank, that is often the environment she finds herself speaking in. In the valley between life and death, sound holds no power, and Evidansa may speak as low and as soft as she wants. The dying will always listen. But here, in this small haven carved only with comfort in mind, a far cry from the fire and brimstone surrounding it, there are many sounds to drown out her words. It is no matter. Her friend always finds a way to listen too.
“Yes. I suppose it’s somewhat of a morbid curiosity, but why was I chosen in death to serve you? Why not to serve with the others?”
“I have chosen you three for a reason. In your deaths when I came to you, each of you did something no other mortal had ever done when I went to bring them into the fold.”
“And that is?”
A smile forms on her face, soft and doting at the memory.
“Each of you is different, and their stories are not mine to tell, but I can share yours, if you would like.”
Evidansa pauses at their nod of agreement, hand stilling on top of the teacup it rested upon, and the memory overtakes her, coating her words in an amused, sentimental tone that is hiding an almost reverent awe.
“You smiled and said hello.”
