Wax Lantern

A wax lantern a fire-based lighting source that is used in wealthier households. It is in contrast to the candle exclusively used as a source of light and decoration element. The container that holds the wax is usually decorated with intricate paintings. This light source is usually manufactured by the ceramist in collaboration with the chandler.

Manufacturing process

The manufacturing process is split into two parts - the creation of the clay vase and the creation of the wax light.

The Clay Vase

1. Prepare the clay body.
2. Shape the clay into a vase on the pottery wheel. Optionally create a matching lid
3. Fire the finished vase within the kiln
4. Glaze the baked product and fire it again

The Wax Light

1. Attach a candle wick with a piece of wax to the bottom of the clay vase.
2. Attach a wooden wick holder to the other end of the wick to keep it straight in the pouring process.
3. Melt a wax block and pour it into the prepared clay vase.
4. Let the wax cool on the cooling rack and detach the wooden wick holder.
5. Add the lid to the vase if available
