Session 21 - Ryphol

General Summary

The hive group set out for Dustgarde with their newly acquired ship 'The Last Mistake' when the crystals powering it started sputtering out, sending them in a free fall for a split second. IG-88 was able to discern that the old crystals were expelling excess waste magic and were nearly drained. They decided to drop altitude to fly just above the waters. A short time later the crystals gave out completely, forcing them to sail. Around this time someone also noticed that the large crystal they liberated showed an image of Ryphol. The image reacted to their presence looking at each individual. Yog covered the crystal with a tarp and IG-88 reflected on the magic that was used, revealing that it must have been some strong and ancient (even to him) magic used for such a long range divination spell.
After a day of sailing, a small island was spotted and group landed there as Khajit's weapon had been playing its warning music for sometime. IG-88 scouted the island quickly while the others manned the ballistae. Ryphol jumped out of the water near the ship and headed headed towards the vessel. Kylar fired a well aimed shot at the dragon, only for the runes on the body to activate and completely stop the bolt without even flinching. All but Kylar were frightened in awe of the massive dragon as it landed on the deck of the ship, but Krinan who was able to discern a large gap in the runes under his neck. While the dragon did swipe his tail at most of the group, he focused much of his attention on smashing the deck and reaching inside the hold to grab the crystal. Khajit did perform a hellish rebuke after being swiped by the tail which did harm the beast but just barely.
Kylar was able to first successfully hit the dragon in the soft spot not protected. This obviously did not sit well with Ryphol who decided to focus attention against him. Many attempted to attack the dragon in the same location as well but the overwhelming and instinctual fear made this difficult for them. Yog started tossing out animals from his bag of tricks providing distractions for a short time and he eventually overcame the fear and was able to engage with the dragon. Khajit used his new ability to briefly enter the astral plain and drink a potion of invisibility as well as some much needed healing. At this time Ryphol took off in flight with the crystal, his massive wings knocking Yog and Khajit onto the ground. Ryphol then lined up a breath attack that Kylar narrowly missed but Yog and Khajit did not. This proved to much for the tabaxi to bear and he remained slumped over.
Yog and the dragon duked it out more, even when the dragon attempted to retreat and grabbed the tortle and forced him underwater. Krinan administers a health potion to Khajit who immediately dives off the ship and uses his ring storing polymorph to turn into a Killer whale. The dragon threatened to destroy Yog's people which only further enraged her to strike the final blows that took the massive beast out.
