Malediction Phage
Little is known about the Malediction Phage. From accounts it would appear that some form of magic was involved in its transmission which likely explains its sudden appearance and disappearance. It is estimated to be responsible for the deaths of millions.
Soon after its disappearance the Vazar Empire began its decline from near total control of Anazar to the coastal nation it is today.
There have been no known cases of the always fatal plague to have been reported for over 800 years.
Transmission & Vectors
Scholars still argue about possible vectors or patterns of infection. What is known is that proximity or interaction with the infected did not notably increase one's chances of contracting the disease. This has lead to speculation that it was a targeted and crafted disease, with everyone else being carriers.
Symptoms
The phage causes boils to appear on ones body, along with high fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. The boils never become open sores, in fact attempting to cut a victim causes the cut to heal over much like a healing potion. It has also been known to actually cure other conditions, commonly broken bones from fainting.
Treatment
Many different attempts to treat the affliction were tried, but as many medicines are actually poisonous the curative properties of the phage tend to render these useless.
The most effective treatments were on the symptoms themselves. Bed rest to keep from over exertion. Cool damp towels on the forehead and neck for the fever. A few notable accounts from different parts of Anazar note that victims who ate pickled foods tended to feel better.
Prognosis
There are no accounts of anyone surviving the condition. Victims typically die from dehydration caused by its other symptoms. The boils slowly disappear from the body once deceased. By some of the later accounts the victims appeared to come back to life in an undead manner, but none have been corroborated.
The condition is rather prolonged with many accounts of victims lasting half a year or more before dying. Most did not feel the need to be bed-ridden until the later stages after months of the boils appearing. They did feel the effects of the fever early on leading to dizziness.
Cultural Reception
The first accounts were recorded near present day Echar , but it soon was recorded all over Anazar afterward including inside Echar and several of its high ranking priests.
Despite this, many believe to this day that the plague was created or otherwise caused by Echar. Supporters often cite that recorded cases sharply dwindled once Echar began its rebellian against the Vazar Empire. As a result many consider Echarans unclean and harbingers of disease.
