Shardscale Drachenlings

Shardscale drachenlings take their aspects from volcanic glass. Their name originates from the shard-like quality of their scales which share many properties of obsidian. Their scales are a glossy black, sometimes with jagged edges, with the possibility of various occlusions visible within each scale. It is not uncommon for a Shardscale to feature an impressive array of snowflake obsidian, fire obsidian, or other varieties adorning their bodies - particularly in locations such as the horns, brows, and other prominent locations. Frequently, Shardscale horns are jagged and rough, prone to frequent shedding of larger scales. This is an important aspect for Shardscale drachenlings as their scales are useful in applications requiring extremely hard and fine abbrassives or sharp edges. The outer layers of horns, claws, and even their scales shed into the material referred to - unsurprisingly - as Shardscale. This is a useful material which is often sold to smiths, jewelers, carpenters, and other professions which utilize fine abrasives or kept to be worked with by their own Shardsmith. They possess a unique affinity for knapping flint, obsidian, and their own shed scales into extremely sharp implements.   In Ethalea, Shardscale Drachenlings frequent volcanically active regions such as beneath the Worldspine with large populations in Eastborne, Kiln, and Vol'teh'kron. Owing to their affinity for sharp objects and blades, many Shardscale drachenlings find employment as smiths, butchers, barbers, chefs, and even surgeons - professions which require the use or creation of sharp, bladed tools.
