Aurelian Empire

The Aurelian Empire is the dominant political and military power of Aural, founded in 270 AC by Emperor Aure. Built upon the principles of order, expansion, and imperial supremacy, it has shaped the course of history across Leo for centuries. Despite its strength, the empire has endured internal strife, civil wars, and challenges from rebellious factions.

History

Foundation and Rise

The empire was established when Aure, an elven ruler and military leader, united the fragmented human and elven factions of Aural. Under his rule, Heartspire was founded as the imperial capital, and a system of governance and law was imposed to consolidate power. The empire expanded aggressively, subjugating various independent states and absorbing vast territories.

The First Imperial Civil War (395 AC - 401 AC)

Aure’s rule, though celebrated by elves and humans, was resented by other races, many of whom were enslaved or subjugated. This discontent culminated in the First Imperial Civil War, where enslaved races, aided by sympathetic humans and elves, revolted. Though the rebellion was eventually crushed, Aure was forced to introduce policies that allowed slaves to earn their freedom through service and loyalty. This created a structured system where those who demonstrated unwavering commitment to the empire could transition into a lower-tier citizenship. Over time, this policy led to the emergence of a distinct social class—former slaves who, though technically free, remained economically and politically disadvantaged. While it alleviated some tensions, it also bred resentment among the nobility, who viewed the growing number of emancipated individuals as a threat to the rigid social hierarchy of the empire.

The Second Imperial Civil War (469 AC - 476 AC)

In 469 AC, Lucian Mordrake, a high-ranking commander, uncovered an Eternal Shard and used its power to challenge Aure. This led to the Second Imperial Civil War, a brutal conflict that saw Mordrake's forces overpower the imperial legions. In 476 AC, Aure was disintegrated by Mordrake in the final battle at Heartspire, marking the end of his reign and the beginning of Mordrake’s rule.

Government and Politics

The empire is ruled by an Emperor, who wields absolute authority. The central administration is supported by the Council of Nobles, composed of influential elven and human aristocrats. Imperial policies are strictly enforced, maintaining rigid social hierarchies and imperial dominance.

Under Lucian Mordrake, the empire has become a highly controlled state, where military power and arcane forces are used to suppress dissent and secure control over its vast territories. Mordrake has instituted a network of imperial enforcers known as the Drakeguard, elite warriors empowered by dark sorcery who root out rebellion before it can take hold. Additionally, he has enacted the Edict of Dominion, which grants the emperor unchecked authority over all magical artifacts, including those held by the Magisters, ensuring that no rival power threatens his reign. Public executions and mass purges of suspected dissidents serve as a grim reminder of his absolute rule, keeping the populace in fear and submission.

Society and Culture

Aurelian society is built on a foundation of hierarchy and discipline:

  • Elves and high-ranking humans form the ruling elite, occupying positions of power.
  • Other races, though freed from slavery, remain socially and economically disadvantaged.
  • The Imperial Legions maintain order and enforce imperial law, ensuring that resistance is swiftly dealt with.
  • The Magisters, despite being neutral, wield great influence due to their arcane knowledge and control over magic.

Heartspire serves as the cultural and intellectual hub, with the Aurelian Academy training scholars, diplomats, and military leaders. Beyond its educational role, the academy plays a crucial part in shaping imperial ideology, instilling loyalty to the empire and reinforcing the principles of hierarchy and discipline. It is also a center for historical revision, where imperial scribes ensure that records of past events align with the narratives that serve the ruling class.

Military and Expansion

The Imperial Legions are the backbone of the empire, renowned for their discipline, training, and advanced weaponry. They employ a mix of traditional warfare and arcane support from Magisters. The empire continuously seeks expansion, though its conquests have been slowed by internal conflicts and rising opposition forces like the Alliance in Frostheir.

Current State and Challenges

Under Mordrake’s rule, the empire is at its peak in terms of military and arcane dominance. However, resistance movements continue to rise, particularly from the Alliance, which seeks to restore the ideals of Aure’s rule. Tensions also persist with the Magisters, whose power remains unchecked despite the empire’s attempts at control.

The Aurelian Empire remains the most formidable force in Leo, its fate tied to the ambitions of its rulers and the unrest brewing within its borders. However, cracks are beginning to show—rival factions, internal power struggles, and the growing influence of rebellious movements like the Alliance threaten its stability. As whispers of dissent grow louder and ancient forces stir in the shadows, the empire stands at a crossroads, where its future may be shaped by war, diplomacy, or forces beyond mortal control.
