Second Imperial Civil War
The Second Imperial Civil War is a devastating conflict that erupted in 469 AC and lasted until 476 AC, ultimately reshaping the power structure of the Aurelian Empire. The war was primarily driven by the ambitions of Lucian Mordrake, a former imperial general who, after obtaining an Eternal Shard, launched a campaign to claim the imperial throne.
Background
Following the Concord of Liberation, the Aurelian Empire underwent major social and political changes. While these reforms helped stabilize the empire, they also created lingering tensions between traditional imperial loyalists and the newly emancipated factions. Emperor Aure, still ruling with a firm but measured hand, sought to maintain peace between the various groups. However, as decades passed, discontent grew among noble houses and military elites who saw the reforms as weakening the empire’s traditional foundations.
During this time, Lucian Mordrake, a prominent general, gained influence due to his military prowess and his vision for a more centralized and authoritarian rule. In 468 AC, he came into possession of an Eternal Shard—an artifact of immense power. Some Magisters speculated that this shard originated from The Reaper, while others believed it to be a fragment of the Unstable Shard created during the Calamity.
Outbreak of War
In 469 AC, Mordrake declared himself the rightful ruler of the Aurelian Empire, denouncing Emperor Aure as weak and unfit to rule. Backed by discontented nobles, mercenary forces, and legions loyal to his cause, Mordrake launched a surprise assault on Heartspire, the imperial capital. The initial siege was brutal, forcing Aure to mobilize all available forces to defend the city. Battles erupted across the empire, with various factions choosing sides in the conflict.
Mordrake’s forces, empowered by the Eternal Shard, proved nearly unstoppable. His power allowed him to crush opposition swiftly, utilizing devastating magical and tactical advantages. Despite desperate resistance, Heartspire fell in 476 AC, marking the end of the war and sealing Mordrake’s ascension to the throne. In a final confrontation, Mordrake personally faced Emperor Aure, disintegrating him before his loyalists with the power of the shard.
Aftermath and Consequences
With the war won, Lucian Mordrake proclaimed himself the new Aurelian Emperor, ushering in a new era of authoritarian rule. He immediately implemented the Edict of Dominion, centralizing power and cracking down on any remaining opposition. Many former imperial loyalists fled to Frostheir, where they formed the Alliance, a coalition of exiled nobles, military leaders, and rebels who sought to one day reclaim the empire.
The Second Imperial Civil War left the empire in ruins, with entire cities devastated and countless lives lost. Although Mordrake’s rule brought stability, it came at the cost of severe oppression. The lasting effects of the war continued to shape the empire’s political landscape, with resistance groups secretly working to undermine Mordrake’s rule and restore a more just government.
Despite his brutal methods, Mordrake’s victory marked a turning point in the empire’s history, solidifying the power of those who wielded Eternal Shards and demonstrating their unmatched influence over the fate of civilizations.
