Frostheir
Frostheir is the northernmost continent of Leo, an unforgiving land dominated by glacial tundras, towering ice cliffs, and frigid winds. It is a land of extreme conditions, where survival is a constant challenge, yet it is also home to a resilient and battle-hardened people. Frostheir serves as the last refuge of the aurelian loyalists, who fled the Aurelian Empire after the Second Imperial Civil War (469 AC - 476 AC) and established the stronghold of Frosthelm. The continent remains a bastion of independence, survivalism, and determination against the ever-present threats of both nature and war.
Geography and Climate
Frostheir is a land defined by ice and stone, with very little arable land. The terrain is made up of snow-covered plains, massive glaciers, and jagged mountain peaks that pierce the sky like frozen sentinels. The cold is relentless, and blizzards can last for weeks, turning the land into a white void of endless ice.
- The Frostfang Peaks: A towering mountain range that spans across the western part of the continent, forming a natural barrier against coastal storms.
- The Frozen Plains: A seemingly endless tundra of permafrost and snow, where only the hardiest creatures and nomadic hunters can survive.
- The Frozen Coast: The northernmost coastline, where icebergs drift across the frigid sea, and frozen harbors remain locked in ice for most of the year.
- The Howling Abyss: A massive crevasse in the eastern regions, from which an eerie wind constantly howls, leading to many legends about what might dwell within.
The climate in Frostheir is subarctic, with temperatures plunging far below freezing for most of the year. Brief summers allow for some thawing, but even then, the land remains harsh and inhospitable.
History and Origins
Frostheir was largely uninhabited before the Second Imperial Civil War, aside from a few scattered nomadic groups and ice-dwelling tribes. When Lucian Mordrake claimed the imperial throne using the power of an Eternal Shard, the remaining loyalists to Aure fled northward, seeking refuge from his rule. They sailed through perilous, ice-ridden waters and landed on Frostheir, where they established the Alliance and Frosthelm, their last bastion of defiance.
Despite the odds, the loyalists adapted to the frozen wasteland, carving out settlements from the ice and stone. Over time, they hardened into a people who valued resilience, honor, and survival above all else.
Culture and Society
Frostheir’s people, known as the Allied or the Aurelians of the North, live by the principle that only the strong survive, and only the united endure. Their culture is one of perseverance, where every member of society must contribute to ensure the survival of the whole.
- Warrior Ethos: Every citizen is expected to learn how to fight, as raiders, beasts, and the elements themselves pose a constant threat.
- Honor and Loyalty: Betrayal is considered the highest crime, as trust and unity are essential in such an unforgiving land.
- Harsh Justice: Laws in Frostheir are strict, but fair. Thieves, deserters, and traitors are often exiled into the wilds, where few survive.
- Clan System: Society is divided into clans, each responsible for different aspects of survival, from hunting and fishing to blacksmithing and warfare.
- The Icebound Oath: A sacred vow taken by warriors who pledge to defend Frostheir until their last breath.
Economy and Trade
Despite its isolation, Frostheir has carved out a role in the global trade network of Leo. Its people rely on both self-sufficiency and external trade to endure the harsh conditions.
- Frost-Steel: A rare and highly durable metal found deep within the Frostfang Peaks, known for its near-unbreakable properties.
- Whale Oil and Icefish: Harvested from the Frozen Coast, these provide vital sources of heat, food, and trade goods.
- Furs and Leather: The pelts of Frostheir’s hardy wildlife are prized across Leo for their warmth and durability.
- Icebound Relics: Some believe Frostheir contains buried ruins and ancient artifacts hidden beneath its glaciers, occasionally unearthed by the shifting ice.
Conflict and Challenges
Frostheir is not merely a land of natural hardships—it is a land constantly under siege, whether from internal struggles or external threats.
- Drakthar Raiders: Mercenaries and pirates from Drakthar see Frostheir as a land of opportunity, raiding settlements for supplies and resources.
- Mordrake’s Influence: The Aurelian Empire, still under Lucian Mordrake’s rule, has made attempts to reclaim Frostheir, though the harsh terrain makes large-scale invasions nearly impossible.
- Wild Beasts of the Tundra: The massive, fur-covered predators of Frostheir are as deadly as any blade, forcing settlers to remain ever vigilant.
- The Frozen Curse: Some whisper that the land itself holds a dark power, as some who venture too far into the icy wastes are never seen again.
