Frosthelm
Frosthelm is the capital and stronghold of the Alliance, a city carved into the icy heart of Frostheir. Founded in 476 AC by exiles fleeing the tyranny of Lucian Mordrake, it stands as the last bastion of resistance against the Aurelian Empire. Built into the frozen cliffs of the Frostfang Peaks, Frosthelm is nearly impenetrable, withstanding both the relentless cold and imperial assaults. It is a city of warriors, strategists, and survivors who refuse to kneel to Mordrake’s rule.
Geography and Structure
Frosthelm is carved directly into the Frostfang Peaks, blending fortress and city into one monolithic structure. The city is protected by natural ice walls, sheer cliffs, and a network of defensive outposts, making it one of the most defensible locations in all of Leo.
- The Ice Gate: The only entrance to the city, an enormous gate reinforced with enchanted frost-steel, ensuring no force can breach it easily.
- The Upper City: The highest levels of Frosthelm house the Council of Exiles, the military command, and the quarters of Thomas Feyer, leader of the Alliance.
- The Military District: This area contains barracks, armories, and training grounds where warriors prepare for battle against the empire.
- The Frostforged Forge: The city's famed blacksmithing district, known for producing legendary frost-steel weapons and armor.
- The Lower Tunnels: A network of underground tunnels providing shelter, food storage, and escape routes in case of siege.
The frigid climate of Frostheir means that Frosthelm relies on deep reserves of supplies, including whale oil, ice-harvested fish, and preserved rations brought in from trade or raids.
History and Founding
After Lucian Mordrake usurped the Aurelian Empire, those who remained loyal to Aure’s ideals were driven into exile. Under the leadership of General Thomas Feyer, the survivors made a perilous journey north to Frostheir, braving deadly storms and harsh terrain. Upon reaching the Frostfang Peaks, Feyer and his people discovered an ancient cavern system, which they fortified and expanded into Frosthelm, the city-fortress that would become their new home.
Despite Mordrake’s attempts to crush the resistance, Frosthelm has never fallen. It remains a beacon of hope for those who believe the empire can still be reclaimed.
Culture and Society
Life in Frosthelm is dictated by the harsh reality of its environment. Only the strong, disciplined, and resourceful can survive here. Every citizen contributes to the city’s survival, whether as warriors, hunters, blacksmiths, or strategists.
- Martial Society: Every resident is trained in combat, ensuring the city is always ready for war.
- Merit-Based Leadership: Unlike the empire, where power is inherited, in Frosthelm, leadership is earned through skill and dedication.
- Survival Above All: The city is built for efficiency, with no luxuries—only the necessities required for endurance and resistance.
- Deep Loyalty: The people of Frosthelm are fiercely loyal to Thomas Feyer and the Alliance, seeing their struggle as a fight for justice.
Military Strength and Defenses
As the heart of the Alliance, Frosthelm is heavily militarized, boasting an elite fighting force trained to endure extreme conditions. The city’s defenses are legendary, making any direct assault nearly impossible.
- The Frozen Ramparts: Massive walls carved from the mountain itself, reinforced with frost-steel plating.
- The Watchtowers: Strategic outposts along the cliffs, providing early warning of any incoming threats.
- Frosthelm’s Garrison: An army composed of former imperial soldiers, exiles, and mercenaries who have pledged loyalty to the Alliance.
- Raiding Forces: Small but deadly units that strike imperial supply lines and outposts, ensuring the empire never rests easy.
Challenges and Threats
Though Frosthelm has remained undefeated, its survival is not guaranteed. The city faces numerous challenges, both from external enemies and internal struggles:
- Imperial Invasions: Mordrake’s forces have made several attempts to crush Frosthelm, though none have succeeded.
- Scarcity of Resources: The frozen landscape provides little food, forcing the city to rely on trade, hunting, and strategic raids.
- Harsh Environment: Blizzards, avalanches, and bone-chilling temperatures make life in Frosthelm a constant battle against nature itself.
- Divisions Within the Alliance: Not all factions within the Alliance agree on the best strategy—some advocate open war, while others seek a more diplomatic approach.
