Frostfang Peaks
The Frostfang Peaks are a vast and imposing mountain range that stretches across the northern reaches of Frostheir, forming a natural barrier between the frozen wilderness and the stronghold of Frosthelm. These towering, snow-covered peaks are among the harshest and most treacherous landscapes in Leo, shaped by millennia of ice, wind, and unrelenting cold.
Geography and Climate
The Frostfang Peaks dominate the skyline of northern Frostheir, their jagged summits piercing the heavens like the teeth of an ancient beast. The range is characterized by sheer cliffs, deep glacial valleys, and treacherous ice fields, making travel extremely difficult for all but the most experienced climbers and scouts.
The climate in the Frostfang Peaks is brutally cold year-round, with temperatures rarely rising above freezing. Blizzards can rage for weeks, reducing visibility to almost nothing and burying entire pathways beneath towering snowdrifts. The icy winds that howl through the peaks are infamous for their deadly chill, capable of freezing an unprotected traveler in minutes.
Notable locations within the Frostfang Peaks include:
- The Iceflow Crevasse – A massive rift in the glacier-covered landscape, where ancient ice has split apart, revealing eerie blue depths below.
- Stormwatch Summit – The highest peak in the range, often hidden behind a veil of clouds and said to be a vantage point where one can see all of Frostheir.
- The Wyrm’s Maw – A cavernous opening within the mountains, rumored to be the resting place of an ancient frost dragon or a forgotten passage to deeper mysteries.
- The Frozen Abyss – A seemingly bottomless chasm said to be cursed, where the howling winds take on an unnatural, whispering quality.
History and Legends
The Frostfang Peaks have long been regarded as both a natural fortress and a cursed expanse. The earliest settlers of Frostheir, before the arrival of the Alliance, spoke of spirits that wandered the peaks, lost souls of those who perished in the cold. To this day, travelers report eerie lights and shadowy figures appearing on the mountainsides, vanishing just as quickly as they emerge.
The peaks have also played a crucial role in history. During the Second Imperial Civil War, the loyalists fleeing Lucian Mordrake used the mountains as a natural shield, navigating hidden passes to evade pursuit. It was within these peaks that they discovered the caves that would later become Frosthelm, allowing them to build a fortress that no empire could breach.
Flora and Fauna
Despite the extreme conditions, the Frostfang Peaks are home to a handful of resilient species that have adapted to the cold.
- Frostclaw Bears – Massive, thick-furred predators that roam the lower elevations, hunting anything they can catch.
- Icefang Wolves – Swift and cunning hunters that move in packs, using the snowstorms as cover to ambush prey.
- Glacier Serpents – Rare and elusive, these enormous serpents are said to slumber beneath the ice, awakening only during the fiercest winters.
- Everfrost Pines – A hardy type of tree found in sheltered valleys, capable of surviving subzero temperatures and serving as a rare source of wood in the region.
Significance to the Alliance
The Frostfang Peaks serve as both a shield and a proving ground for the Alliance. Their natural defenses keep Frosthelm secure, preventing large-scale invasions by the Aurelian Empire. At the same time, warriors of the Alliance undergo brutal survival training in the mountains, testing their endurance against the elements to prove themselves worthy of defending Frostheir.
The Alliance has established a series of watchtowers and hidden outposts throughout the mountains, using them as observation points and fallback positions in case of an imperial assault. The treacherous terrain makes invasion nearly impossible, giving the Alliance a strategic advantage despite their smaller numbers.
Dangers and Challenges
While the Frostfang Peaks are a formidable natural defense, they are also a place of constant danger:
- Unpredictable Avalanches: The slightest disturbance can send thousands of tons of snow and ice cascading down the mountains, wiping out anything in its path.
- Treacherous Paths: Hidden crevasses, collapsing ice bridges, and shifting snowbanks make travel extremely hazardous.
- Feral Creatures: Many of the creatures that inhabit the mountains are deadly predators, and some believe far older horrors slumber within the ice.
- Blizzards and Ice Storms: Visibility can drop to near zero in minutes, leaving even the most experienced travelers disoriented and vulnerable.
