Lucian Mordrake

Lucian Mordrake is the current Aurelian Emperor, having seized the throne in 476 AC after defeating Emperor Aure during the Second Imperial Civil War. He is one of the most feared rulers in the history of the Aurelian Empire, known for his brutal tactics, absolute control, and mastery over an Eternal Shard, which granted him unparalleled power.

Appearance

Lucian Mordrake is an imposing figure, standing taller than most men, with a lean yet muscular frame honed through years of military service. His once-human features have become unnervingly sharp and angular, his skin pale as if drained by the power of the Eternal Shard. His piercing silver eyes, said to glow faintly in the dark, are a source of unease even among his closest advisors. Long black hair, streaked with faint traces of silver, falls past his shoulders, often kept tied back in a regal fashion. Though he still wears the imperial regalia, adorned with gold and black, his presence alone is more commanding than any crown or robe. Some whisper that his prolonged use of the shard has begun altering him further, making him something more—or less—than human.

Early Life and Rise to Power

Born in 430 AC in a village near Heartspire, little is known about Mordrake’s early life before his ascension. Some accounts suggest he was the son of a minor noble or a distinguished soldier, but no official records confirm these claims. He was a high-ranking military commander in the Imperial Legions, renowned for his strategic brilliance and ruthless efficiency. He distinguished himself on the battlefield, earning the favor of nobles and ambitious officers within the empire. However, his true rise to prominence began when he uncovered an Eternal Shard, an artifact of immense power said to be remnants of the Eternal Servants.

With the power of the shard, Mordrake amassed a loyal faction and declared his intent to overthrow Aure, whom he viewed as weak and unfit to rule. His campaign was swift and decisive, culminating in the Battle of Heartspire in 476 AC, a brutal conflict that saw Aure’s forces make a final stand against Mordrake’s superior numbers and magical might. The battle raged for hours, with Heartspire’s streets turned into a battlefield of arcane devastation and siege warfare. However, the tide shifted when Mordrake unleashed the full power of his Eternal Shard, obliterating Aure’s most trusted commanders and breaking the morale of his remaining forces. In a final confrontation at the steps of the imperial palace, Mordrake personally disintegrated Aure with a single surge of raw energy, solidifying his rule and cementing his place as the undisputed Emperor.

Rule and Governance

Mordrake transformed the Aurelian Empire into an autocratic state, consolidating power under his direct control. Unlike Aure, who ruled through law and tradition, Mordrake governs through sheer force and fear. His rule is characterized by:

  • The Drakeguard: A network of elite enforcers imbued with arcane power, loyal only to him, used to suppress rebellion and enforce his decrees.
  • The Edict of Dominion: A decree granting the emperor full authority over all magical artifacts, including those held by the Magisters, ensuring no rival power challenges his rule.
  • Public executions and purges: Used as a tool of control to instill fear and absolute obedience among the population.
  • Imperial Militarization: The empire's legions have been expanded and enhanced through dark sorcery and brutal training, making them more formidable than ever before.

Under his reign, the empire has reached unprecedented military strength, but at the cost of widespread dissent and growing unrest among nobility, Magisters, and resistance movements like the Alliance. The nobility, once accustomed to wielding influence within the imperial court, has been largely sidelined, with several powerful families stripped of their lands and titles for perceived disloyalty. Some have attempted covert uprisings, though all known plots have been ruthlessly quashed by the Drakeguard. The Magisters, on the other hand, remain divided—while some have sworn allegiance to Mordrake out of necessity, others secretly conspire to weaken his hold over the Eternal Shard, fearing its growing influence over him. Reports suggest that a faction within the Magisters has begun researching ways to sever his connection to the shard, though their efforts remain hidden from the emperor’s watchful gaze.

The Eternal Shard and Mordrake’s Power

Mordrake’s control over an Eternal Shard is one of the key factors behind his dominance. The shard grants him:

  • Enhanced longevity, making him appear unaged despite decades of rule.
  • Arcane mastery, allowing him to wield destructive magic beyond the capabilities of any mortal.
  • Absolute authority, as no known force has been able to challenge his strength in direct combat.

Scholars and Magisters debate the nature of his shard, suspecting that its corruption may have altered his mind, making him more paranoid and ruthless over time. Historical accounts suggest that previous wielders of Eternal Shards have also succumbed to their influence. Some believe it to be an Eternal Shard once belonging to The Reaper, explaining its connection to death and decay. Others, however, argue that it is a fragment of the Unstable Shard, imbued with chaotic energies that twist the wielder’s psyche. Regardless of its origins, many agree that Mordrake’s increasing obsession with power is not just ambition, but a symptom of the shard’s dark influence.

Opposition and Legacy

Despite his unchallenged rule, resistance movements such as the Alliance seek to overthrow him. Thomas Feyer, a former imperial commander, leads the opposition, rallying those who still believe in the ideals of Aure’s empire. Additionally, Magisters have grown wary of Mordrake’s grasp over magic and fear the long-term consequences of his unchecked rule.

His legacy remains uncertain. While some see him as a necessary force keeping the empire at its peak, others view him as a tyrant whose downfall is inevitable. Whether he will maintain his grip on power or be undone by rebellion, treachery, or forces beyond mortal understanding remains to be seen. Cracks are already forming in his reign—whispers of discontent among his own generals, hidden factions within the Magisters working to sever his connection to the shard, and the growing might of the Alliance all threaten his rule. Even the shard itself may prove to be his undoing, as its corrupting influence continues to erode his sanity.
