Drakthar
Drakthar is a rugged and diverse continent located to the west of Dunelar, separated by the Sea of Sands. Known for its fertile lands, towering volcanoes, and dense forests, it is a place of both great opportunity and unrelenting danger. The name Drakthar originates from the Orcish language, where “Drak” means free and “Thar” means land, translating to “Land of the Free.” It is a realm shaped by resilience, independence, and a history of struggle against oppression.
Geography and Climate
Drakthar’s landscape is dramatically varied, offering a contrast to the desolation of Dunelar and the temperate plains of Aural. The continent is home to fertile plains, volcanic highlands, dense forests, and treacherous coastlines.
- The Fiery Mouth: The largest of Drakthar’s two active volcanoes, located near the northern region close to the city of Drak. The land around it is highly fertile due to volcanic ash deposits.
- The Lonely Flame: A smaller but no less significant volcano, located on an island to the southeast of the mainland.
- The Verdant Expanse: A vast stretch of dense jungle in the south, home to rare flora, hidden tribes, and dangerous beasts.
- The Ironwood Highlands: A forested mountain range known for its nearly indestructible trees, often used for shipbuilding and fortress construction.
- The Black Marshes: A dangerous swamp region filled with treacherous terrain, home to outlaws, exiles, and creatures adapted to the murky waters.
Drakthar experiences a temperate climate in the central and coastal regions, while the north is dominated by volcanic activity and the south by tropical humidity. Seasonal storms frequently batter the western coast, making seafaring a risky endeavor.
History and Origins
Drakthar’s history is shaped by migration, rebellion, and survival. It was largely uninhabited before the First Imperial Civil War (395 AC - 401 AC) when large numbers of rebels, outcasts, and freed slaves fled from the Aurelian Empire. The harsh, untamed wilderness became a refuge for those seeking freedom from imperial rule.
Founding of Drak
The city of Drak, the continent’s largest settlement, was established by refugees who sought to build a home far from the empire’s grasp. Over time, it became a melting pot of orcs, humans, elves, and other races who wished to live without external rule.
Culture and Society
Drakthar is a land where independence and self-reliance are the highest virtues. Unlike the rigid hierarchies of the Aurelian Empire, Drakthar operates under the Drakhor, the collective of clans that govern through warrior councils and meritocratic traditions.
- Warrior Traditions: Strength and survival skills are respected, and many settlements have militias instead of standing armies.
- Clan-based Alliances: Various groups govern themselves but form alliances for trade, defense, and expansion.
- Freedom Above All: Laws in Drakthar are minimal compared to other lands, as long as one's actions do not infringe upon another’s right to freedom.
- Orcish Influence: The orcish clans, being some of the earliest settlers, have had a strong impact on the region’s values, particularly in the idea that every individual must earn their place in society.
Economy and Trade
Despite its rebellious and lawless reputation, Drakthar plays a significant role in Leo’s trade network, thanks to its abundant natural resources.
- Metal and Ore Mining: The volcanic regions are rich in precious minerals and strong metals used in weapon forging.
- Timber Trade: The Ironwood Highlands provide some of the strongest wood available for shipbuilding and construction.
- Exotic Wildlife and Plants: The Verdant Expanse contains unique herbs, rare animals, and powerful alchemical ingredients.
- Mercenary Work: Many warriors from Drakthar offer their skills as mercenaries, serving as bodyguards or elite soldiers across the world.
Conflict and Challenges
Drakthar, though known as a land of freedom, is far from peaceful. The lack of a centralized government means that power struggles, clan wars, and outside threats are constant challenges.
- Inter-Clan Rivalries: Disputes over land, resources, and leadership frequently lead to skirmishes and large-scale battles.
- Imperial Interest: The Aurelian Empire continues to view Drakthar as a lawless land that must be brought under control, leading to occasional military conflicts.
- Wild Beasts and Monsters: The untamed wilderness is home to dangerous creatures, from towering reptilian beasts to arcane horrors lurking in the swamps.
- Piracy and Smugglers: With its rugged coastline and lack of law enforcement, Drakthar has become a haven for pirates and criminal syndicates operating across the seas.
