Drak

Drak is the largest and most prominent settlement in Drakthar, a land known for its fierce independence and warrior culture. Founded by exiles and rebels fleeing the Aurelian Empire, the city has grown into a thriving stronghold of commerce, warfare, and self-governance. Positioned near the Fiery Mouth volcano, Drak is both a center of industry and a fortress against any who would seek to subjugate its people.

History

Drak was established in 401 AC by former slaves, mercenaries, and dissidents who had fled the First Imperial Civil War. After securing their freedom, they sought a land where they could rule themselves without fear of oppression. They traveled westward, braving the harsh conditions of the Sea of Sands, until they reached Drakthar, a continent that was fertile yet untamed.

Here, they built Drak, naming it after the Drakhor, the collection of warrior clans that banded together in pursuit of freedom. Over the centuries, Drak transformed from a loose gathering of refugees into a formidable city-state, fiercely protective of its independence and way of life.

Geography and Layout

Drak is located in the northwestern region of Drakthar, near the base of the Fiery Mouth volcano. The volcanic soil makes the surrounding lands exceptionally fertile, allowing the city to sustain itself despite its harsh reputation. The city is structured around key districts:

  • The Iron Ring – A massive defensive wall encircling the city, constructed from stone and reinforced with dark iron extracted from the nearby Ironclad Mines.
  • The Forge District – The heart of Drak’s industry, where master blacksmiths craft some of the finest weapons and armor in Leo.
  • The Warrior’s Hall – A grand arena where warriors train, compete, and settle disputes through combat, reinforcing the city’s martial culture.
  • The Free Market – A sprawling bazaar where traders from across Leo gather to barter in goods, ranging from exotic spices to enchanted weapons.
  • The Council Keep – A fortress where the ruling body of Drak, the Council of Clans, convenes to make decisions for the city and its people.

Government and Society

Drak is governed by the Council of Clans, a coalition of leaders from the various Drakhor clans. Unlike monarchies or empires, no single ruler holds absolute power—decisions are made collectively, ensuring that no clan dominates the others. Each clan contributes warriors and resources to the defense of the city, and in return, they all share in its prosperity.

Drak’s society is built on three core principles:

  • Freedom – No citizen of Drak may be enslaved or ruled against their will.
  • Strength – Every individual is expected to contribute to the city’s survival, either through combat, craftsmanship, or trade.
  • Honor – Oaths and promises are taken seriously, and betrayal is met with swift retribution.

Military and Defense

Drak’s military is one of the most formidable in Leo, not because of sheer numbers, but due to the unbreakable will and elite training of its warriors. Every citizen is expected to know how to fight, and all young Drakhor undergo rigorous training in the Warrior’s Hall. The city’s defenses include:

  • The Iron Ring – Impenetrable walls lined with watchtowers and ballistae.
  • The Ashen Guard – An elite force of warriors who act as both city protectors and enforcers of the Council’s will.
  • The Fireborne – Warriors who have been tested in the volcanic caves of the Fiery Mouth, enduring intense heat and trials of combat.

Economy and Trade

Despite its reputation as a warrior city, Drak is also a center of commerce. The Free Market attracts merchants from across Leo, bringing wealth and trade to the region. The city’s main exports include:

  • Weapons and Armor – Crafted from the finest metals, Drakian steel is renowned for its durability and quality.
  • Firestone – A rare mineral harvested from the Fiery Mouth, used for magical and industrial purposes.
  • Exotic Beasts – Trained war animals, including battle hounds and drake mounts, bred for combat.

Culture and Traditions

Drak’s culture is deeply rooted in warrior traditions, and most disputes are settled through combat rather than politics. Festivals and celebrations often include grand tournaments, feasts, and trials of strength. Some of the most famous traditions include:

  • The Blood Pact – A sacred bond between warriors, signifying unbreakable loyalty.
  • The Trial of Flames – A rite of passage for young warriors, where they must endure the heat of the Fiery Mouth before earning their first weapon.
  • The Oath of Blades – A ceremonial duel to settle grievances, where combatants fight with honor to determine justice.

Relations with Other Factions

Drak maintains a neutral but wary stance toward most factions in Leo. While they refuse to bow to the Aurelian Empire, they are not openly at war with it, preferring to keep their independence at all costs.

  • Alliance – Drak respects the Alliance and its cause but does not formally align with them, fearing that too close a relationship could bring war to their doorstep.
  • Aurelian Empire – While Drak despises Mordrake’s rule, they prefer to fight only when necessary, knowing that the Empire vastly outnumbers them.
  • Magisters – The Magisters have an Enclave in Drak, trading magical knowledge in exchange for rare minerals and metals.
