Enclave
An Enclave is an operational base of the Magisters, serving as a repository of knowledge, an observatory for cosmic study, or a laboratory for magical experimentation. Scattered across Leo, these enclaves are vital hubs for research and arcane mastery. While smaller in scale compared to the Citadel—the Magisters' headquarters—they play a crucial role in advancing magical understanding and safeguarding ancient knowledge.
Purpose and Function
Each Enclave is uniquely designed to suit its primary function, though most fall into one or more of the following categories:
- Libraries: Containing vast collections of texts, scrolls, and recorded knowledge, these enclaves serve as centers for research and scholarship. Magisters assigned to these locations focus on studying historical records, magical theory, and interplanar phenomena.
- Observatories: Positioned in strategic locations with clear views of the night sky, these enclaves monitor celestial events, track the movement of stars and planes, and study how the Eternal Essence flows through the cosmos.
- Arcane Laboratories: Equipped with specialized chambers to contain high-level magic, these enclaves serve as places where Magisters test new spells, study rare artifacts, and analyze the effects of Eternal Shards. Some experiments conducted within these laboratories remain highly classified, known only to the highest-ranking Magisters.
Major Enclaves
Though many enclaves exist throughout Leo, a few stand out due to their strategic importance and influence. These enclaves play a key role in maintaining the Magisters' presence across the world.
- The Citadel: The grand headquarters of the Magisters, located on an island in the Sea of Sands, between Dunelar and Drakthar. It is the largest and most well-guarded Enclave, containing some of the rarest magical artifacts and possibly even multiple Eternal Shards.
- Heartspire Enclave: Located within the heart of the Aurelian Empire’s capital, this Enclave serves as a diplomatic bridge between the Magisters and the ruling elites. Though politically neutral, its presence ensures the Empire’s continued cooperation with the Magisters.
- Drak Enclave: Situated in the lawless city of Drak, this Enclave stands as a bastion of order in a chaotic land. It serves as a neutral ground for scholars and outcasts alike, offering sanctuary to those who seek knowledge rather than power.
- Frosthelm Enclave: Established in the cold reaches of Frosthelm, this Enclave specializes in the study of elemental magic, particularly those attuned to ice and wind. Due to the harsh climate, it remains one of the most isolated and secretive Magister strongholds.
Relations with Political Factions
Despite their firm stance on neutrality, the Magisters are valued by nearly every political faction. The presence of an Enclave within a nation’s borders is often seen as a sign of prestige, as rulers and leaders hope to gain access to magical assistance or knowledge that could be used for economic or military advancements.
Though the Magisters rarely intervene in geopolitical conflicts, they do offer limited aid to those who host them. These favors often take the form of minor magical boons, defensive wards, or knowledge exchanges that benefit the local rulers. However, the Magisters are careful to avoid direct involvement in political struggles, ensuring their enclaves remain safe havens of study and research.
Establishing a New Enclave
The process of founding a new Enclave is both a diplomatic and magical endeavor. When a location is chosen, the High Magister sends emissaries to negotiate with local rulers or influential figures. These negotiations typically involve offers of knowledge, magical wards, or minor enchantments in exchange for permission to establish a presence in the region.
Once an agreement is reached, the Enclave is constructed in mere days using advanced magic, with the emissaries themselves overseeing the process. The resulting structure is imbued with protective spells to prevent unwanted intrusion and maintain the security of the knowledge housed within.
