Iɉen Runestones

The ancient Iɉen had a novel method for enchanting and empowering their equipment, tools, weapons, armor and artifacts through the use of runestones. Iɉen runestones are small, perfectly round gems about the size of a fingertip. On each there are 1-3 arcanely scripted Iɉen runes which in combination with the color of the gem produce specific magical effects.

Items designed to harness the power of the runestones were created with slots where the stones can be inserted to provide their enchantment to the item. These items are classed based on the number of slots the item provides, with standard Iɉen items containing only one slot but as many as 3 slots on an item have been found.

While not many of these runestones have been found or studied, Aracane Scholars estimate there could be as many as 60,000 different combinations of runestones possible. It has also been discovered that not all combinations are compatible, and that a bad combination can destroy the rune or items powered by the rune.

Creating Iɉen runestones is a lost art. Some experiments are trying to replicate the process but none have succeeded thus far. Because of this, the only source of new runestones are what can be found in a handful of ruins in the cold tundra of Koljorn and so they as valuable as they are difficult to obtain.
