Basic Information

Anatomy

Elves have a standard bilaterian vertebrate form. This includes two pairs of limbs, five secondary digits at the ends of each limb, a distinct head with sensory organs, and a exoskeleton for support and defense. They typically walk with an upright posture, with one pair of limbs servings as the "legs" and used for locomotion, and the other pair the "arms" with the digits arranged in "hands" with distinct, disposable thumbs used for grasping and manipulation.

Biological Traits

Elves are nearly sexually monomorphic, with male and female members having the same average heights, weights, and musculature. The only notable outward distinction between the sexes is the enlarged breast tissue in females, which is common in all upright mammals and also unique to them. They typically have a tall slender physique with with decent natural agility.

Genetics and Reproduction

Elves have two distinct sexes and produce offspring through copulation. The fertilized egg gestates in the mother's uterus for between twelve months to a year. At the end of pregnancy the newborn infant is physically and mentally underdeveloped compared to most other mammalian species, as with most upright mammals. The fertility of both parents is suppressed for up to ten years after reproduction due to the resonance between the child's magic and the parents. This reinforces the bond between the parents and child, and allows the parents to devote all of their attention to one care intensive child at a time.

Growth Rate & Stages

Elves have the slowest growth rate and longest lifespan of any race on Gliaclis. Adolescence typically lasts fifty years, though more of this time is spent mastering their magical abilities than physical development. An elf is generally considered to be a fully grown adult at 100 years old.

Ecology and Habitats

Thousands of years ago Elves consciously moved to Gliaclis from the Feywild. They haven't forgotten their first homeland, and feel most comfortable in the forest. They thrive in the dense, wet, Briarwall Forest, but have found success in forests around Gliaclis.

Dietary Needs and Habits

As with most primates Elves are omnivorous but primarily sustain themselves with gathering rather than hunting. The average elves diet consists of fruit, nuts, berries, and vegetables, with large game supplementing their protein needs. Because of their low population density and slow reproduction rate most elves have achieved a relative equilibrium with their environment.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Elves are most concentrated in the Briarwall Forest but have pockets of control scattered around much of Gliaclis. They are also widely accepted in most civilized societies, enough that half-elves have become an normal occurrence around the continent.

Average Intelligence

The average intelligence of elves is perhaps the highest of any sentient race in Gliaclis. Unfortunately it is difficult to determine how much of their intelligence is natural ability and how much is a result of their magic.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Their disproportionately large eyes and ears for their body size grants elves keen visual and audible acuity. In contrast to most mammals, their rather small nose limits their sense of smell. However, elves posses an usual modification to their eyes allowing them to visually perceive The Weave a short distance in front of them. This allows them a form of darkvision.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

While they haven't domesticated their prey to the same degree as many of the other civilized races, Elves have used magic to develop a pseudo symbiotic relationship with several species of animal and plants. Most notably these include:

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Most members of the elven species speak a language known by the other races as elvish. This language is derived from the common language of the Feywild known as Sylvan. Because elves have such long lives and have ease of communication through magic, their language has changed remarkably little over the millennium. One significant variation is the moon elves, the primary inhabitants of the Underdark, whose dialect is called Undercommon as it is the most common language spoken in the Underdark.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Full blooded fey are exceedingly picky about their inter-species relationships. Elves are less picky compared to their fey ancestors, but are still incredible reserved compared to most other races. Humans and orcs are different races of the same species as elves, and as such elf-human and elf-orc hybrids are common enough to have formed their own separate societies.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Due to their naturally elevated levels of magic and high consumption of magical plants, elves typically have a slight purple or blue tint to their skin. This is taken to an extreme in the Drow, whose diet consists almost entirely of magically mushrooms. Their hair tends tends trough shades of blue, from blonde to dark indigo, while their eyes may be blue, green, purple, silver, or gold. Drow are, once again, notable for their albino coloration, with red eyes and white hair.
